update on KS mare

Hi, thats great news, If you look on a few pages ( number 3 at the moment I think) in this veterinary section you will see that I posted an update on my mare who had her op a year ago.

Mares are the best! Mine can be a bit of a diva in life but was an absolute star throughout her whole ordeal. Easy to handle and took all her meds. Only thing she did do was jump out of her restricted paddock after 2 weeks more than once so she went back into the big field! I sincerely hope that your mare goes on to be as happy as mine is. :-)

I take it the first pictures are very close to when the surgery was as it looks freshly done. ?? wow didn't they do a neat job with the staples excellent all sides came together so well.

as for the follow up AMAZING you can hardly see the scar. So glad she is coming out with hardly any trace of surgery and she will be in allot less pain.:D

Just hope my mares comes through her lami as your comes out of this.:D

thankyou tictac
did you have a detailed programme for your mare's lunging

everyone i have spoke with on the KS re hab have had different

ours was 4 weeks boxrest with in hand walk twice a day building up time weekly by 5 mins
then 4 weeks restricted paddock building up time daily depending how she settled with walking once a day for 20 mins

we start next wednesday lunging building up time over 4-6 weeks
with ground poles added to the near end then raised poles

My mares rehab program went to pot a bit due to the horrible winter of last year but here is a brief synopsis of her recovery.

5 weeks box rest, more due to the fact that she had a very bad secondry infection that meant I had to inject her with cobactin every day for about 5 weeks. During this time she would go out twice a day into a stable size grass area rigged up outside her box whilst I mucked out etc so she used to have about a hour a day just mouching with the odd highland fling!

After that she had restricted turnout in an area about the size of 2 stables. out at 6.30am in at 5pm. This only lasted for about 2 weeks untill she decided she wanted back in her own field and jumped back in!!!. As there was plenty of grass in her field by that time I just put her back in there.

She went out evey day and back in at night from October to January. At the end of january once the weather had warmed up a bit I started her on a very simple lunge program. No pessoa as she would just buck and buck. She had a great physiotherapist and I took advice from her. In march I re-backed her and got back on. She was a star and seemed really happy to be doing something again. Since then I have been hacking and lunging. ( now in Pessoa as she is happy to stretch)

I did have a bit of a setback in may when she went lame but it was nothing serious and I just kept on hacking her quietly. She is absolutely fine now.

Each horse is different but my honest opinion based on experience would be to take things slowly. I think if I had pushed my mare to early she would have resented it whereas now, a year down the line I have none of the high jinks I constantly experienced with her on the lunge before her op. Time in the field to recover and then lunging was the key to my mares recovery.

thankyou tictac
we were discussing with the vet about more time in the feild
also we have decided to long rein first rather than putting her striaght onto a circle as she had slight changes in the hocks these have been treated now and also PSD in right hind but from last scan this as improved greatly
