Lari has had his bloods taken today for the insulin resistance test and also a free cushings test.

I await the results of both with baited breath.

As the vet couldn't find out whether sedation would have any marked effect on the results I decided not to sedate with sedalin and to give him his due he was good being led both to and from the field which is probably a quarter of a mile walk. But he did go a bit stupid leaping and broncing for a few seconds.

We made a small paddock on the grass he was on before as there was no where else for him to go. He was out for 60 minutes.

Big decisions to make if the results come back with a huge spike.

The vet was very pleased with his tendon which was still down and faintly warm with the boot removed and was pleased with the way he was walking.

the quick answer is blood shouldn't be taken after sedation

the long answer is here

if I'm on your UI which I'm sure I must be then hopefully someone will pass this on to you.

Useful information - it really annoys me that many vets are seemingly not aware of this.

And insulin resistance tests shouldnt be done when a horse is in pain as it can skew the results.

You're not, thanks. Isn't it strange the same combo of people always like your posts whenever you have anything unkind to say. Almost in the same order too.

I researched last night as I'd rang the vet 3 times by this point fir clarity and was losing the will to live. Alpha 2 agonist sedatives can react with insulin tests but Sedalin didn't appear to have this in. But I didn't take the risk so he wasn't doped.

Good luck with the results!

Did they say when they would be in?
Tomorrow or Monday they said. Lifes one mad roller coaster atm. I have a teams interview tomorrow, was provisionally offered a job last Friday and have another interview on Monday.

I wouldn't trust a 'within normal range' ACTH result tbh. Our Appy was actually 8 times the normal high when we had the TRH,-Stim test after several ok ACTH results, although each reading was slightly higher
Well I've spent £2800 of my own money on vets and rehabbing him before he went to retirement and £1200 on vets since his injury at retirement this time around not to mention the £3800 through insurance so unfortunately one ACTH result will have to suffice. I can't keep pouring money into him.

It's bad enough that it's going to potentially cost £23k over the next ten years at retirement.

I'm prepared to do it if the results come back clear as I love him, he can have a very good quality of life too, but I'm not going to continue pouring endless money into him.

The next vets bill he accrues will unfortunately be the last and for euthanasia. Just hoping it won't come to that.

My friends horse had insulin level sky high but she's out 24/7.

That all sounds very sensible.

...Says she, who funded £1,600 on a colic for Rigs 🤣 but genuinely, I would not be funding extensive vet intervention for him either, for instance if he had lami again with any significance rotation, that would be that. The colic I felt I owed him as it wasn't his fault (his water froze overnight and the inside water, that he also had access to, he had pooed in for the one and only time 🙄). Even than, I had said they could either fix him at home or he was done, as he was not going to be having a colic operation.

My advice, for what it's worth, though, is to not ask people's opinions on such matters until you are already sure as to what to do. It muddies the waters and, when all's said and done, you only have to be clear yourself as to what is right and what is wrong.

Fingers vrossed a good result comes in today, and your interviews are successful.

At least the ground is drying up for his return to retirement!

Actually, I liked the post as I know that sedation does effect the result. I was not being unkind and was simply agreeing with the facts in the post.

Good luck for your interview and well done on the provisional job offer. I hope his test results come back ok, you've certainly gone above and beyond for him.

Hope you're ok and looking after yourself too.

Fingers crossed the results come back quickly. Waiting for them is always tough particularly when major decisions ride on it and you have interview stress on top. These things always seem to come at once! You seem to have made sensible decisions going forward either way. I hope things turn out how you want.
