Yesterday my partner and I went to see a retirement home for Lari that's just 10 miles away from the yard where I currently keep him.
It was really nice, there are about 20 horses there, mares and geldings together. They have access to the fields 24/7 and live out with rugs on or you can choose to have your horse without a rug. They have a hardstanding area which is regularly poo picked and they all feed from hay feeders and mud control mats that lead out into the fields. They just come and go as they want and pair up or make a group of friends, there's no bullying or anything. There's plenty of acreage for them to roam over.
You can choose whether they are fed chaff or not and some are fed once and some twice daily so come in from the herd and go in separate stables to be fed. You can supply your feed or choose for them to supply for you. My friends horse is there and it was her recommendation. horses of all shapes and sizes and colours and it was quite humbling seeing them all there, 'chatting' together and keeping each other company, all much loved horses just like Lari.
So Lari is going March/April time when the weather is a bit kinder as he is coming in at night at the moment.
I'm so happy, I know my original intention was for him to go to the blood bank but I just couldn't let him go and never see him again. I've grown too fond of him, I'd make a rubbish business woman! I plan to visit him once a fortnight to check he's settling in but I'm sure he will, the lady who runs it is very nice and I feel confident she will give him the best care.
