I posted a couple of weeks ago asking people if they thought my horse and I would be a bit of a laughing stock if we entered a prelim dressage test.

Anyway, after all the lovely mails I got sent from you all I have decided not to be such a wimp, to remember I am doing it only for me and my horse and to start getting ready. So ... spent yesterday trying out Prelim 1 and bless his cotton socks, he cantered on the correct lead each time I asked (which is rare for him). So I am feeling more positive about the whole thing

That is why I was so keen to get Sam and I in (despite my OH being v. embarrased that I am in it

)

Now I have an ex-racer I am passionate about letting the world know how great they are, how a non-professional can take them on and generally making sure as many are saved as possible (my horse was off to the dog food factory before I took him on).

I lived in Cyprus for a couple of years in the 1990s and most of the horses at the riding club (I was stand-in manager) were 'off the track'. Some of the horses were very damaged physically and psycologically (there were some very cruel methods used to train racehorses out there) but most of them gave us their best years.

I had to spend months getting one horse to walk quietly on a hack instead of shimmying up the road sideways (in canter) but he was a sweetheart and went on to jump at newcomers level, give me my best ever dressage test and let kids as young as 8 learn on him.

I would love to take another on in the future. Good luck with yours and stick with the dressage as he will get the hang of it.

remember to smile with all your cheeks - if your horse has a little whoopsy ignore it and put it behind you - however, i have a sneeky feeling he's gonna show you how really good he is
