Have had the results back from Mac’s x-ray on his hock. Vet says x-ray shows bone fragments. It isn’t caused by the kick he received. He says it can be treated with medication, though surgery could be an option in the future. He is going to x-ray the other hock today as there is a chance the other hock is affected also.

Does anyone have any idea exactly what this means? OH is coming with me tonight when we pick Mac up, and we will obviously have a good chat with vet then, but I just want to have a rough idea now what I am dealing with.

B'gger. Is it OCD?
A horse on our yard has just had surgery on his hock to remove bone fragments. He's currently on box-rest with walk outs, and has just had a good prognosis from the vet regarding his future as an eventer.

Phew!
From what I can remember the owner saying, he has had these fragments for a while, and it's only in the past month that he started to go slightly lame. She did say they were worse because they hadn't been found sooner, but then there were no indications earlier so it was Catch 22.

I got the impression from her that it was simply caused by wear and tear on the joints - my OH has had arthroscopies (similar treatment!) on his ankles and knees due to playing too much football.

Of course I'm probably way off the mark here

It could be something very similar that Mac has. Have only spoken to Vet on the phone, will have a good chat with him tonight and OH will be with me. (He will take it all in a lot better than me). Hopefully, if it is OCD, we have caught it early. He has been completely sound.

I do hope he's ok, please keep us updated on what the vet says. I always have to take pen and paper with me to the vets, otherwise I forget the details. You're lucky OH will be there as well. Fingers crossed for Mac x

Mac came home on Friday. He does have OCD in the hock he was kicked on, and he also has arthritis in them both.

At the moment he is sound and he is going to have cortisone injections in both hocks on the 30th of this month. He is having a week of just walking, and next Friday, am to start riding him again as normal.

Thankyou everyone for your support.
