update on mare cant eat thread

Just wanted to say a big thank you to those who advised seeking another opinion from an edt. Paul Waudby came out today and turns out both vets missed the fact that half her tooth had cracked off and the gum was inflamed. Im absolutely fuming with the vets as they were pretty much telling me they were certain it wasn't teeth related hence the steroid injections and proposing scans etc. I have also paid for (on 2 separate occasions but within a 2 week period) her teeth to be rasped by them yet this was obviously not done properly as I felt how sharp the teeth were ! I will say Paul was fantastic and thorough and explained everything to me every step of the way... she does need danilon for a few days and mouth flushes until the gum heals and hopefully as the tooth keeps erupting the cracked tooth will heal with minimal dentistry required. I will not be trusting anybody else but Paul with my horses teeth in the future ! Even happier to say she munched through a few carrots tonight and was munching away on her hay when I left
 
Ouch poor girl! Glad you've got to the bottom of it. I think I would be writing a strongly worded letter to the partner of the vet practice to start with!
 
So glad you got to the bottom of it.

You get a few vets that take an interest in teeth but for many it's too specialist, hence my strong personal preference and recomendation to use top qualified edt's - and there aren't that many of them around so check qualifications carefully!!
 
What has he done about the cracked tooth ?
It's a similar experiance with an EDT that means I only have my vet or professor Dixon near my horses teeth in my case an EDT left an extremely valuable beauiful horse ruined for life.
 
tbh i will speak to vets tomorrow but at min just relieved to see her eat again.... goldenstar the bit that has cracked off hasn't left any nerves or anything open he filed what he could and cleaned out the gum etc and hopefully this should heal up on its own over time, i have to flush her mouth regularly to try and stop food building up in the hole. Im just amazed 2 vets didn't notice the tooth as it was clearly visible when paul let me look in her mouth !
 
Oh thank goodness she is getting sorted and eating hay is a fantastically positive sign. :D I hope everything heals and sorts itself out with no further problems.
What a relief for you too. :)

ps. I know the feeling of a professional who really knows their job rescuing you from worry and despair and horse from a big problem... love and respect them forever! lol

Sounds fishy to me....the tooth can't have been painful if he filed it and an inflamed gum would not stop a horse eating. Could be a classic vet v's edt.
 
Glad you`re on the right path now .... and good to hear she`s eating again, keep an eye on it and i`m sure she`ll be fine in no time at all :)

she was heavily sedated by the vet (same vet who had supposedly done the second rasp) funny how the edt showed the vet the hole...also told the vet to feel her mouth before and after .... vet agreed teeth were sharp and the hole was there along with another diastimas ? (gap) edt also showed the vet the hooks and the tooth at the top which had been pressing down onto the broken tooth causing pressure and pain ! and edt and vet both agreed that gum could have stopped horse eating as some of the pallet had come away with the broken tooth hence leaving a big gap that was then filled with old food (that he let us smell ) it was foul and had been there weeks !! funny how vets missed all of this !! happy to say mare has munched her hay all day and just had her supper with a load of carrots in ... didn't spill a drop!! Huge relief ! hoping to come to an arrangement with the vets on payment as senior vet was first to "rasp" then other vet said there was still sharp edges etc so he rasped 1 week later.... nether rasp was any good and second vet did agree with edt that teeth were still sharp etc and she had huge hole where tooth had come off.... sorry if iv missed stuff out just hard to write down everything... and im just so happy my mare is back to her happy self eating hay! just got to get her use to having a hosepipe in her mouth to flush it...any help much appreciated ! Also had I have known she had all these problems going on in her mouth I would never have allowed her to have steroid injections in the tmj joint.... vets were trying to convince me this was not teeth related... they wanted to do scans and scopes !!
