Hi.

Several people asked if I would post updates on my daughter who lost a leg in an accident in 2012. I would post the link to the original post but I don't know how!

Anyway, in March she had a lesson which was her first time back on a horse since her accident and walked, trotted and cantered! The instructor was so pleased with her. He told me that as soon as she got on the horse he could see, just from her seat, that she was going to be fine.

Since then, great strides. She has bought a horse and is riding him! He is young and green and is going to be trained for dressage and to respond to a long whip in the place of her left leg aids. He is ID x TB and stands at 15.3hh at the moment though likely to reach 16hh. He is a complete sweetheart and very calm and steady.

At present she is sticking to walk and trot with him as she doesn't have a specialised riding prosthetic. Her left leg position with her everyday prosthetic is quite out of position but this will be better when she gets a purpose-made one. She manages to mount on her own from a mounting block but mounting from the right hand side. She is fine dismounting too.

So pleased with her and him and life in general :D

Highly inspirational indeed, brave girl and well done! I really look forward to hearing more and definitely seeing some photo's of her and the new horse! Is she still aiming for para dressage?

Wow, just Wow, I remember reading your first post and to come back on here and read the update is fantastic, I have a little boy with cerebral palsy who loves to ride, despite any difficulties he seems determined to overcome them! we use Dorset Orthotics for his Ankle safo's I do know they make the most amazing mind blowing prosthesis and can adapt or cater to any needs, very knowledgeable about horse riding and the individuals requirements, I know they are some distance away from you and apologise if you have already got things in place! but just wanted to let you know, really looking forward to further updates!

that is great to read OP. How brilliant that your daughter is doing so well that she has felt confident to get her own horse. She is clearly a very courageous and determined young woman and deserves her happiness - as do you. Huge congratulations and very best wishes for continuing happy and rewarding times for you all x x x

Hello, This is lovely to hear. I am an above the knee amputee and have been back in the saddle for a 7 years now. I do not have a special leg, they would not give me one, so I have just had to get on with things the best I can. My horse is an ID X TB the same size and she is fantastic with me and seems to know that I am not how I used to be lol. We have had our ups and many downs in our learning process but have to say most of the time now we are having great times and the tears do not happen that often. I had to re learn how to ride after having horses all my life and yet am able to find an above the knee rider who I can talk to and get advise. Our greatest achievement came last summer when we won our first Ridden Showing Class I was over the moon. Anything is possible if you put your heart and soul into it, and it sounds like your daughter is just like me and she will go on to bigger and better things anything is possible if you believe you can. If I can be of any help in any way please do not hesitate to contact me and I would be more than happy to help her in anyway that I can. I really mean this please contact me I would love to help. Sending you all my best wishes Chrissie x
