My friend is going to be Ok. He had an op on Monday to put plates/pins in his arm, he is bright enough I'm told and feeling ok in himself.

Sadly he feels he will never ride again and now the horse must be sold. His son, a professional jump jockey might know someone knowledgeable who wants Dick, but otherwise I dont know where he'll go now

Its so sad, he took his time with Dick, brought him on slowly, was patient and forgiving with him and now to be put off riding, perhaps for life - all because of a silly avoidable accident.

Such a shame.

I'm sorry your friend feels like this, but glad that he is OK and will make a full recovery

Maybe ask him to take his time and think about riding again, after a very nasty accident, your first reaction is never to do that activity again, but time does heal, and if given time, maybe he will change his mind.

I hope he does, as he seems like just the sort of person his horse needs

Glad to hear that your friend is slowly on the mend, on the other hand it is a very sad outcome both rider and horse, such a shame.
You never know one day your friend might warm to the idea of riding again, may just take a lot of time, if not then I'm sure everyone can totally understand. I hope the horse finds a good home, after all it wasn't the horses fault, just a tradgic accident by someone not using their common sense.

Hope things work out for the best for everyone concerned.

Oh, sorry to hear that...

After an accident though, it's almost inevitable that you don't feel like doing the activity again that caused the accident in the first place.

Some people find it difficult jumping, for example, when they injured themselves doing so... I started not liking hacks (!!!) because that's when my accident happened - totally fine riding & jumping in an arena though!

I think time does heal - and I hope it will be the case with your friend.

Dick is an ex p2per, after being wound up on a ride by someone galloping past him, he lost his head and reared and went back on his rider and crushed his arm.

yeah just read other post some people really are idiots, especially seen as they knew said horse.

hope your friend recovers well and hope you workout what to do with dick.

What a shame your friend feels like this. I had a bad accident when i was little when a horse fell over with me. i broke my knee, leg and big toe ! and i was out on my own. I must admit, being so young at the time, i got over it and was never put off. However if something happened like that now i am alot older, i dont how how i would react. A horse i was riding last year reared really high with me and tanked off. I had a phobia for rearing for months after and thought everything i rode was going to rear. So i know how your friend feels. As time goes on he may feel better.

I completly understand how he is feeling. Years ago I broke my leg in 2 places from a horse landing on it. I had had fall after fall and when I did this I just thought forget it, no more, I have had enough. I told my mother I didnt want to see the horse again when I came out of hospital. This, I kept to my word but I hobbled up the yard to see friends who were asking if I would get another blah blah blah and for months I said outright NO! I had had enough.
My friend virtually threw me on board her horse still with my leg now in a half cast and right there and then I changed my mind and still have horses to this day so he might just need time and maybe a gentle push when the time is right.

Very pleased that he is all ok though.

Glad he is feeling better

- and he has been put back together but sad that he feels he doesn't want to ride again

. A totally understandable reaction in view of his accident. I'm sure he will make the right descison about Dick in the end. I hope his BIL is thoroughly ashamed of himself.....

To be honest unless the horse goes to a very knowledgeable person I do wonder if he would be better off PTS. Still, not my decision but will try and help him along the way if I can.

Starting off with a ride on Big Ed, who is solid as a rock
