Hi to everyone who read my post about 2 weeks ago about my lovely horse being kicked in the field and having a broken leg, and for all the very kind wishes and advice I have received, it's most appreciated!

As I finally have a little time to spare I thought I would do a quick update on his condition.

We boxed him to Newmarket last Thursday to Rossdales to be re-xrayed they said that they couldn't detect a fracture of the main Tibia but confirmed that a chunk of bone has broken off of the top of the Tibia. As well as the broken bone being painful there are a lot of ligaments that attach to this part of the bone and they have been stretched and pulled although they could not detect any that had been completely ripped off.

They said that the piece of bone is really too small to pin or screw but too big to warrant an operation (which was my worry) to remove it, so they are hoping with 6 weeks box rest that the bone will knit back together, so more x rays in 6 weeks to assess the situation. Thankfully he doesn't need to be cross tied.

I am so proud of him though he travelled both ways like a dream! Decided not to use travel boots as he always walks like a demented duck in them! Went in a trailer on the way, my friend backed it right up to his stable and after a week being cross tied, he just stomped out up the ramp and stood there ready to be tied up!

When we got to Rossdales he grew to about 17.2 and although he had about 5 people around him and all the parifinalia of the examination room the most scary bit was the tiny drain that ran along the door of the exam room which he had to hop and jump over!! Then he was like a kid in a sweet shop just looking up at the ceiling at all the winches and pipes and wires while a vet nurse put a tag on his tail another was asking me questions with a clip board and a vet was examining his leg!

I actually felt OK when they led him away, as people said on the forum it's a very nice place and they were all so professional and I suppose I was just relieved to not have the worry of him being cross tied and me waiting for a call in the middle of the night to say he had gone down, at least there is 24hour care at the hospital.

He came home on a lorry the next day and again loaded like a dream. In fact we thought he had fallen asleep on the way home as there wasn't a peep from him the whole way!

So he is now back home and fingers crossed he will mend in time. He is not too happy being in and managed to break his stable light on Monday so i had to get all the bedding and hay out that I had just put in that morning!! arrrrggghhhh! He has Sedalin and I used it for the first time Monday, vet said he can have some each day if necessary. Think he will prob need it most when the other horses are being turned out.

Have put a post on Stable yard re BoxRest supplement, Global Herbs, if anyone has used it or is of any use?? will let you know how we get on , but good news is it isn't as bad as originally thought, not good but not drastic! and thanks once again for everyone's kind words and thoughts!! If all goes well he will 'get out' at Easter!!

So pleased the outcome is looking better now. He obviously is being a very good patient throughout all of this. Good luck with his recovery

Jen, if you have anyone local that can do reiki for you it is brilliant for broken bones, speeds up the healing, but only if you are 100% sure the bone is where it needs to be! Hope he continues to do ok

Brill news. I would get some symphytum as it is know as knit bone remedy so will help it to knit back together quicker! But again only if bone in correct place as makes it kniy where it is!

oh! that is good to hear. i saw your pics on your original post and thought 'OMG-what a handsome boy!' and then 'what a crying shame that this has happened to such a nice horse and his obviously proud owner'. i can only wish you both the very best for the next few weeks - please keep us updated on his progress.......

So pleased to hear that it is not as bad as it could be - you could try some comfrey (knit bone). I used this when my very old TB fractured her fetlock. You can get it from Feedmark.

Vet said it certainly would not hurt to feed it and it has been known to help heal bones.

That's great news! My horse had a bone chip on his splint bone when he fractured that and it healed with box rest. It took a while, but he's fine now. I replied to your last post and said Rossdales was good, they are so nice

and I wouldn't mind their yard

Good luck with the box rest and I hope he gets better soon

Brilliant!! I was wondering how you were getting on and didn't want to ask in case it was bad news.

Bless him for being so good, and laughing at the drain - mine found that scary too!

OMG Im so pleased to read this post!! You must be so thrilled hes gonna be ok

I was a bit worried when they took my chap off me but by doing that I was able to ask questions to the vet which was handy

Who did you see?

I tried the global herbs but it didnt work too well (and also smelt of curry

) He was on magic which did the trick but hes now on brewers yeast (coz its so cheap) and its working well.

Re the carthorse

Well the insurance will pay the majority but not all the extra bedding, hay etc and the fact that he broke his stable light on Monday so YO has to get an electrician in to fix it, smashed the thing to bits!

On ACP now to chill him during the day when he seems most stressy, thing is he will have to be moved to another box when electrician comes, hope to do it tomorrow so once 'drugged' also hoping he will be able to walk 2 boxes down while the work is done, keep fingers crossed for me!!!!

I'm pleased for you that the prognosis is better than you feared. Fingers crossed for a quick recovery.
We're on week 5 of box rest for a fractured leg suffered as a result of a kick in the field so I share your pain.
