Just to update all you kind folk who replied to my panicked post last week; my horse went down to Dick Vet early last week and had keyhole surgery. He has basically got a big hole right in the core of his deep digital flexor, which apparently is very rare (Dick Vet only seen 1 other with it). They feared the injury had extended out to the edge (sorry, I'm not good with the vet speak!) but luckily when they went in to look it hadn't. So they tidied up the torn tendon ends and injected it with plasma stuff. That was Wednesday, he then colic'd a bit on Thursday which was rather worrying but came right so we picked him up yesterday and he's now home where he should be :) He has a very large bandage on, stitches due out next week then am to start walking him out in hand for set periods, otherwise he's box rested for the next 3 months until he's rescanned and we see whats happened.

He still only has a 50% chance of coming back into work and even then the vets wont say to what degree (he was at 1* level and 1.20m BSJA), I guess because its so rare they dont really know :( Its just so sad because this horse is very active, he adores going out eventing. Already he's fed up of being in the stable and at the end of it his career could still be over :( He'd hate to be a field ornament.

You must be devastated, everything crossed for you that he supercedes what is expected and comes right for you, keep your pecker up (Iknow it's hard i'm struggling with horse injury too at the moment) ;)

Thanks Devilwoman :( Yeah, will just be positive and take the rehab very seriously obviously to give him the best chance. Will just have to wait and see.

What injury is your horse struggling with currently?

really so sorry you are going through this right now, fingers crossed it all turns out more positively than it seems x

Fingers crossed for a good recovery. Hector had PRP treatment last Sept for some ligament damage. He looks pretty good now. He had minor damage and was box rested for 10 days then turned out in a pen. He is now back in normal work but is no longer allowed to jump.

You must be devastated, but, 50% chance is better than no chance, chin up MM, he's been a fit healthy horse otherwise which is a really good start. fingers x'd and Mega healing vibes heading your way

50% still gives him a chance.

I know how you feel - I was devastated when the vet told me J would probably never jump again and he had done a 1.30 grid only two weeks before he injured himself.

what about a career change? he could come sound enough to do some dressage or showing. that's the plan with mine once he heals.

chin up and healing vibes for your boy

Thanks guys, yeah I guess a chance of career may have to be thought about depending on the outcome. Thing is, he's a jumper! That's what we do, we hate the dressage bit :( Couldn't show him as he's just not the type (he's an eventer build Lusitano x TB so not suited to any classes).

Hasn't come at the best time given that I'm 5 weeks off having my first baby, oh and 2 weeks off having sold our house and moving out (with the house purchase currently looking dodgy due to the other side being difficult)!! So am sitting here with a big tummy, surrounded by moving boxes and about to go home to mums to muck out poor injured horse - and I still have 3 weeks left of work which is busy as hell...! AGH!

Its interesting to hear how other peoples horses have turned out.

Devilwoman - Wow, that does look horrid. Lots of vibes sent your way!

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear about your horse. My boy did his DDFT last year and was given a 50% chance of going back eventing although he did say that even if he does he would only be able to do a couple in the spring and a couple in the autumn when the ground is good. Like your lad my boy lives for his jumping, as far as we were concerned the dressage was just part of the entry fee so I know how heartbreaking it is.

He had the op last Aug (snip the annular ligament and clean up site of tendon damage) and then he was off until end of March when we started walking under saddle. It's a very long road and I won't know for another year (I have decided not to attempt any kind of jumping until 2013) whether we will ever go eventing again but all you can do is try and keep your chin up and enjoy what you have.

Good luck with your boy x
