am i ment to magic it from the dvla to my house or bypass the postal strike, im aware its a police affence not to display your disk, even if its fallen out the window, but there are people out there who dont even tax or insure there vehicles, at least i have actually taxed mine!! why cant they pick on someone their own size

Hi Miss Buffay,

Can I have a rant about car tax as well please?

I'm worried sick about car tax too. We've only got one vehicle on the road at the moment - a car which we bought last year. It appears however, that the previous owner never sent in the log book to transfer the ownership to us (and we never thought anything more about it until the other day when we noticed the tax had run out).

Now, we have insurance and MOT for the car, but can't get it taxed without a logbook (because we cannot show the tax reminder form which you get posted - that's because we never received one because the vehicle has apparently never been transferred into our name).

So I've had to send off a cheque for an extra £25 to the DVLA to get a duplicate/new logbook issued. This, they have advised me "will take up to 30 days to process and meanwhile there is no other way or place you can obtain car tax, so you have to keep the vehicle off the road until it's processed and you receive the new log book" - only then can I apply for tax.

But the reason we've only got 1 vehicle on the road at the moment is that OH who is self-employed had such a bad month last month that we simply can't afford to get the back axle on the Landrover repaired, so we were making do with just one car until we could afford the repairs. Now I don't know what we're supposed to do without any vehicle at all - even if we went nowhere else, neither my office nor the place I keep my horses is accessible by public transport. I can't walk or cycle either, as I recently broke my leg and only had the cast taken off on Friday and am still on crutches.

Just re-read what I've written - and I realise it sounds all self-pitying. I don't mean it to be, but I'm just worried sick now about what we're going to do next, because I am a genuine person who has every intention of paying car tax (and have over the last few days genuinely tried to do so!)

Does anyone know how much you're likely to get fined/what the penalty is if you get caught without car tax?

Glad that at least you got your sorted out Miss Buffay.

i had that same problem with my old car, i only had a new keepers suplement and didnt get the log book through but i didnt have to pay £25, i stapled my new keepers supplement to the form and they sent me the registered keeper document through. im liable for up to a £1000 fine for not displaying my tax disc so i would imagine it would be more harsh for not having tax

Sorry didnt see your original post but Im presuming you couldnt tax your car as your insurance dets werent updated online. I had the same problem too as both ran out in the same month so to avoid it next time I have taxed my car for 6 mths and then I will tax it for 12 mths next time. This way I avoid both tax and insurance running out at the same time. Its stupid though as Id paid my insurance, didnt have the new certificate so went on line and couldnt bloody tax it their either.
