So update on Frankenhorse;-)

Went over today and he is much happier in himself.....Now we have got the bloods back from the emergency vet we have turned him over to the care of our normal Holistic vet. He has prescribed a drench to help him eliminate the toxins, Vitamin E with Selenium to help the tying up. And today for the first time after spending two hours watching we saw him do his first Normal light yellow Pee.....hooray.

(My Stepson thought we had gone crazy lying in the paddock waiting for him to pee then getting very over excited when he let loose gallons of healthy light yellow stuff....I told him "hey thats horses mate if you own them you celebrate that they pee and poo normally"

As for the splitting weepy skin on Thursday were were advised to apply Green Argiletz Clay and success! it has lifted away the necrotic skin leaving fresh healthy skin underneath which is dry to the touch and no longer smarting. Vet says to give one further application to bring away the rest of the dead skin then he will come over on Tuesday cut away the flaps (to save him from rubbing them off and ripping healthy skin) at which point we can then apply Aloe Jelly to keep the new skin moisturised.

All in all he seems quite happy in himself loves seeing people we think for the main reason that it is something to rub against!

He is walking a little more freely today and hopefully the Vit E will do ints job in a few days.....so fingers crossed that it does its job and this is just a case of tying up and nothing underlying it.

I have attached pics some of them are a bit wincy so be warned. Thanks for all the good wishes and advice.....hopefully we are getting there

Hello Mum
hellomum.jpg

Aww bless him

When you said about the peeling skin I really was not expecting it to be so bad
shocked.gif

Will his hair grown back normal colour or do you think it will come through white cuz of the damage done?

Awww,,, poor chap. I also missed the original post, is it some sort of hyper-sensitivity reaction?, only ever seen something similar in cows as a result of eating St Johns' Wort.

It looks like nice healthy skin coming through beneath though. Poor lad, bet it's been really sore

Poor baby! And poor you! Just had a read through your previous posts about him, never seen anything like that before but glad he seems to be on the mend now. He must be such a good boy to trust you to touch that bless him. ((hugs)) to both of you

Ok Quick Update.

Vardi cast himself on Sunday morning.....we found him at 7am with one foot caught in the stable divider on his back totally sweated up and exhausted. We think he may have been down for 4 hours plus.....Luckily he is a calm boy and after a bit of a struggle gave up and waited to be rescued. It took 6 of us to dismantle the stable and get him on his feet.

On sunday morning his eye looked like this;

youshouldseetheotherguy.jpg

He was very very lame and covered in what we thought at the time were abrasions. He peed later that day and it was showing red rang vet who told us normal he has exhausted himself and the red is the lactic acid coming out.

On Tuesday emergency vet came to check and took bloods (and scared me to death by seeing that if he was still lame at the weekend we had to xray to check for bone fissures!) Anyhow bloods showed he had so exhausted himself and strained his muscles that he was tying up so Vit e and a drench was prescribed.

On thursday his skin where the abrasions were was ripping as he walked, peeling off and was smarting if you touched or applied cream to it.turns out his whole near side where he was laying was one big pressure sore.....Vet siad to try Green clay to cool everything down keep the flys out and to take off the necrotic layers of hair and skin.

There you go potted history

Yes the hair will grow back white......I am hoping that he will stay with his roaned out colour now and not revert to his bright bay with only a blanket in the winter.....if he does pish no matter in the scheme of things I will just be glad to have him with us.

He needs at least 2 months rest and looking at the skin loss I think we have no hope of getting a saddle on him till the latter part of the year......so someone will be doing a lot of groundwork come October!

Thanks for the update, poor you and poor him, must have been terrible for you

I hope he continues to recover well, what a blessing that he didn't panic,, he sounds like a lovely chap.

What a brave little chap and it just goes to show what terrible injuries can be inflicted from getting cast.

Keep up the good work with him ( and piccy's which do make you go, ooohhh but are quite interesting). Gentle
(((((( Hugs)))))))) for your pony x

Indeed someone is going to be introduced to 'Mr Casting Roller" when they eventually get back inside a stable

Poor boy, that looks sore! I have seen similar in a horse post surgery, and he healed really well, so fingers crossed that your boy does the same.

Poor little chap.

If it's any consolation my horse did something similar (but didn't do quite such a good job as your chap

) and also lost huge amounts of skin. He's Bay and I was convinced it would all grow back white but it didn't - so maybe he will be OK. It was a long healing process but all was fine in the end.

Hugs hunny. He is such a sweetie.

What is the prognosis?

[/ QUOTE ]

THanks Mrs M his is very very special and has never once in all this shown anything but total trust in all of us which considering he is still a baby (he only turned 4 in March) I really do feel very humbled...

Prognosis......well as well as it is only tying up and he responds to the Vitamin E and the drench, gets plenty of rest and gets rid of all the lactic acid then full recovery but it will take time.....2 months at least of total rest. So I am crossing everything that it is only tying up and muscular.....we luckily have a wonderful holistic vet who is going to bring in the full armoury of accupuncture, Chiro etc to help with any muscle damage. He is young he is strong and he is very chilled so hopefully this ll goes in his favour.

As for the skin.....well yep the hair will grow back it will take time and I see no hope of getting a saddle on him for ohhh months....so ground work only I am afraid until the skin is healed and has grown back as no way will I risk any more pressure injuries.

As I see it he is only just 4 so if we dont carry on with his ridden training for 4 or 5 months then he has more time to mature....if we can get him hacking out by the time he is 5 in March I will be well happy.

My word poor boy, and you.

I have never seen anything like it, I am glad to hear that it seems not to be anything too serious.

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery

poor little chap. glad to hear he is on the mend and well done to you for looking after him so well. hope all continues to heal so well

So glad he's on the mend, he's a lucky and lovely boy.
We had a cat burnt badly by Fairy Liquid of all things and the skin was just the same but she came through it OK as I'm sure he's going to.

He actually looks better to me than you explained! The skin unerneath is very healthy looking.

The easiest way to expalin it is it sounds like he has given himself carbet burns (OK stable burns! lol) Sorry not belittleing your boy in anyway.

I think (hope) that you will be surprised how quickly he will heal should no infection happen, which looking at him you have done a fab job of so far.

Keep up the good work.

Crikey - I haven't seen anything like this before either.

What an awful shock it must have been for you to find him that morning (my mare has got cast before but nothing any where nearly as bad as yours).

So very glad he is on the road to recovery
