Thanks to all who helped re: the horse which was getting stress colics when he came in and ate his dinner.

He's been down to the vets for a full check- they scoped him and found nothing, they prodded, poked and pulled everything, all with no response.
So he's now living out at night and eating his meals in the field. So far he's not reacted at all and seems perfectly content- no more odd drawing back of the neck.
We're going to try bringing him back in at night in a couple of weeks to guage his reaction. It's inpractical to have him out at nights through the winter sp he'll probably end up being turned away with the youngsters for the winter if the problem is still there.

thanks for the update boss, will be interesting to see how he gets on in a couple of weeks

Strange one. You could try feeding him in the field, giving him an hour or so, then bringing him in for the night.

Just out of interested when he eats does he raise a foreleg and/or knock his feed bowl over?

We've tried feeding him in field and he still comes in and does it- oddball!

No he doesnt do anything unusual with his legs, it's all in the head/neck it would appear
