Update on new mare and EDT visit

The EDT was really lovely. I phoned him this morning to make her an appointment and he suggested a week on wednesday. When I explained that she was new and balling up hay, really struggling to eat he said he'd make time and come at 12 (hence the post asking if he'd need anything)

Anyway, she has the longest back teeth he's ever seen

He showed me and I couldn't believe it. It's the number 11's I think he said and they're so long it's no wonder she can't eat-she can barely close her mouth properly. He's returning with power tools but is going to have to shorten them, then possibly make another appointment 10-12 weeks later to do it again.

Poor, poor girl
 
Its such a shame bless her, I class teeth etc as basic horse care, why dont people do this? It makes me so cross sometimes, especially in cases like this.

Still, she will be more comfortable soon and well done for noticing and getting it sorted.
 
I didn't have her vetted-I paid £50 for her and brought her home with me on saturday morning. She's had the dentist today, has the vet on wednesday and the farrier on thursday.

I think she's a condition score 1.5, she looks worse than Henry did, but it could be the time of year, I suppose, full summer coat as opposed to his bit of fluff, adding the illiusion of him carrying more weight. I shall be interested to hear the vets opinion.

She's currently slurping up some soaked cubes and afterwards is going on the long grass at the back of the house, on the EDT's advice. She'll be as fat and healthy as Voguey in no time.

Oh I forgot to add, she's beautiful, jet black, white star, about 14hh, dainty little thing.

Surely that's irrelevant, because the horse would need sedating.........
 
Not necessarily, the horse is in her 20s and if it can be done unsedated then is far better for her ethically (my opinion)
If not then return at a later date with the vet.

Either way, she is getting fixed (the most important thing) and I hope she starts eating a bit better!
 
minus the wires it is far less dangerous than hand floats with new blades.......one misdirected swipe = lots of blood

I can run my power diamond reciprocating disc on full power on my skin and no damage donw......v clever gadgets!

The noise is worse than it sounds!

Hi again! No he didn't have his power tools with him as he technically wasn't available today and he wasn't needing them for whoever he did have booked in. He really went out of his way to get here at really short notice when I explained my predicament. I asked about sedation but he said once they get going she'll probably be fine with it. He also said that even including the time he spent in America where he saw old horses 20+ who'd never recieved dental care, he's never seen teeth that long. The poor girl. Yet despite all this she's just such a sweetheart.

I can't wait to see her really tuck into a good meal rather than the 'soup' she's living on!
 
Victoria-I meant to ask before-is she likely to be sore or anything afterwards? The EDT said he'll probably have to do it in stages and will be trying to remove 8-10 mls per time. They're a good inch longer than the others, so I imagine it'll take a while to get done. I'll be asking the EDT when he returns, but am likely to forget...is she likely to need bute or anything afterwards? He's also bringing his camera, and I'll get a before and after pic too.
