So the vet came out and x rayed Paddy's back on Thursday morning, and found that he has pretty severe kissing spine. Very old and chronic injury. He has never since I have had him shown any signs that he is pain, though he would have been in severe pain at some time in his life. The vet who saw him does not think that surgery is an option as he is no longer in pain and it would be major as 6-7 spinous processes are fused. I am undecided as I do not know enough about either type of surgery and their implications to make a decision. Have spoken to Cotts equine, who may be able to go and see Paddy whilst he is in Devon, have also emailed Svend Kold and am waiting to hear back from him. Obviously the last thing I would want is to create pain where there is currently none, through the current state of his spine means that he is not very flexible in the middle.

The good news is that he can continue his hoof rehab, and is currently being worked in hand and being led off another horse, and has started to put on muscle and his feet are improving no end.

If you are interested here are Paddy's x rays, cleverly stitched together by Nic:

And here is a photo of his bottom in April;

And this was taken recently - he has visibly put on muscle already :)

The plan is to continue working him in hand and being led off another horse, doing hill work etc, then lots of lunging in a Pessoa, plus pole work, stretches, possibly use a water treadmill as there is one near to me and physio, in order to lengthen and stretch his back, build up muscle and once he has built up enough muscle, start riding him.

To say that I am gutted is an understatement - it's been a pretty crappy year personally, and with Paddy's foot problems & now this am wondering when I will get some good news :(

Oh golly, poor Paddy. He's had a tough time in the past and it must be so hard for you too.

I do agree with the Vet, if he has no pain from his spine, I would leave it alone.

I hope that he keeps on improving and you are able to ride him soon. :)
