Vet been out again this morning and reckons it is the small ligaments under his fetlock so wants him nerve blocked and xrayed beginning of next week. He doesn't seem to think this is going to be a major problem, but I am understandably worried despite vet telling me not to worry. So has anyone else had experience of ligament problems around the fetlock area and if so was the horse ok afterwards? Can you still do the same things with your horse, ie jump etc or do you have to restrict what they can do? thanks Sue

ARGH

I cannot offer any advice at all but hope it is a short blip and he will be back to full force soon x

Thanks Lou, just feel like crying really but then reading about people losing their horses makes me realise that this isn't such a major problem afterall

i think silmarillion off here is going through a similar thing with her mare atm - might be worth PMing her.

Hope the nerve blocking brings something up so you find out what it is at least x

Sue, really sorry to hear that about Pidge. Our mare is on 3 mths box rest, she too was pratting about on hard ground. Vet did nerve blocks & x-rays and could only conclude it was soft tissue damage between fetlock and foot. All the other horses are out on grass and she is standing inside. Vet was confident she would come right but we had to obey the 3 mths box rest..

As you say there are so many horses being lost that it isn't the end of the world.. Good luck with him..

Thanks, sorry to hear your mare is on 3 months box rest. Pidge is going on box rest as of tonight with the help of some ACP tablets from the vet as he is feeling so well in himself and would just end up racing round the box and do more damage, hence the ACP! Currently he is on a very small fenced off part of the field!

Vet recommended somewhere like a small orchard where she could graze but not get any speed up!! She has settled very well on box rest, it has surprised us all as she is the yard menace racing up and down starting games and she seems to have a need for speed.. She is being feed smaller meals at shorter intervals and folks on the yard have been great dropping her feeds in and snack a ball when we aren't there.

In a couple of weeks she can go out into a small fenced off area no larger than her stable, but after reading Pidge's adventures with the electric fencing I am not so sure!

well that was the reason for not putting him on box rest to start with - imagine a horse doing the wall of death! however I'm sure the ACP will take the edge off him - I hope so............

Has Missy done 8 weeks of box rest? OMG how fast did that fly? I am sure it wasn't fast enough for you but seems like it was only yesterday it happened.. Think it is a sign of old age when time flies so fast!

O blimey sorry to hear that! There is and end in sight though and it will come quicker than u think. Speaking from experience as u know! After 3 months box rest and 3 weeks in a teeny tiny field Oscar is now out in his normal sized field and after a 5 min blast (thankfully looking sound) his tummy got the better of him!

Did u think about trying a herbal calmer too to help with the box rest???

Sorry to hear that Sue

and I hope Pidge will soon be well again

I cannot offer any advice on this though as it is something I have not experienced so all I can send at this time is get well thoughts for Pidge x
best wishes

typical horse eh thinking of their bellies

I suppose however long it takes to sort him out at least I still have him! Could have picked a better day to do his scans etc as that is the day 2 years ago I had to have Higgs PTS with grass sickness so not a good day for me

Have boxed him tonight and gave him his 4 ACP like sweeties, god he can be so gullible

and he is now dozing in his box and hasn't called for Sunny once! However Sunny is not impressed at being in the field and no sign of Pidge so will have to keep an eye on him me thinks!

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What terribly bad luck!

I am so sorry to hear of this development. Fingers crossed he's back on top form soon.

You can always pop over to my house if you run out of wardrobes to clear out while he's on box rest!

thanks Patches, I have fingers and everything else crossed too! might just take you up on that offer as not many wardrobes left to sort and with mucking out twice a day I am slowly shrinking

so can feel a shopping trip coming on for new clothes or choose the cheaper option and put them in the tumble drier on hot

Basically nerve blocking and xrays will pin point where the actual problem is.
They will start at the hoof probably, by the coronary band and work up from there. Nerve blocks numb the leg from that point down, so if he goes sound after the first one you know the problem is in the hoof as opposed to his fetlock, and if he isnt sound after that the problem will be further up his leg, hope that makes some sort of sense!!

Hopefully his ligaments will heal after time and rest, he may have to be gradually bought back into work and his jumping reduced, but he is healthy and young so should recover well!!
Fingers crossed a??

Ligaments usually function is to support the fetlock joint during the weight-bearing phase of the stride. Its usually in this phase where they are damaged by either uneven loading of the limb or an uneven ground surface and even poor foot balance.
You would probably notice a reduced function of the affected foot, so lameness, swelling, pain in the area and heat! As he is on bute, which acts and an anti inflammatory and painkiller these symptoms would be reduced, probably alot.
Does this help a little?
Fingers crossed he will be ok

thanks Smurf, he had absolutely no signs of any swelling whatsoever, no heat anywhere and I got several different people to check him out on the Sunday. Vet couldn't find any signs of anything the next day either, even scrapped all his sole of foot to see for anything there. The only time he had any swelling and heat was last Sunday night when he had a small hot lump just above his fetlock but then during Saturday night he had broke one of the electric posts in 3 and little bits in field! couldn't find any signs wrong Sunday morning but swelling and heat there Sunday night. they went after 2 days. So am hoping that its not ligaments? Am hoping he just gave himself a knock on the leg as he is a bit of a cluts!!!!!

Must admit, no swelling, no heat, etc, doesnt sound like ligaments, maybe as initially thought a sprain?
Also if not could have given himself a knock like you say, but you could look at the possibility of getting his shoe off to check under it for abcesses, to rule out anything wrong under the shoe, that is if he still has it on lol!

really hope its not ligaments. He was really lame on the Sunday but by the next day nowhere near as bad so am reall hoping its a sprain or he's clonked himself badly!
Well he still has all 4 shoes on though the back will more than likely be coming off on Tuesday when he goes for his scans. The vet did scrape all his foot to see for signs of an abscess but no sign of anything. When vet came again last monday after the electric tape problem, he did say he was only 1/10 lame. very confusing, just want to find out what is wrong and get it sorted out.
