Got Maiden back from the vet this afternoon. The short of it is that we still have no idea of the cause of this lameness!
The long of it is that the vet did the three nerve blocks used to diagnose navicular as he was almost certain it was that - she has all the predisposing factors to indicate navi. Apparently if one or more of these blocks come back positive, it is likely to be navi - and all three were negative and she was as lame as ever. So in a way I'm relieved, but then we still have no idea of what's causing her discomfort (apparently she wanted to have a buck on the lunge but was in too much pain

)
Vet also attempted a tendon sheath block which made her sound on the left fore (but lame on the right), but admitted that he is almost certain he missed the sheath and the anaesthetic leaked and got a nerve running higher up, hence why she went sound (she is sound on both forelegs when they are blocked at the pastern joint). So it's not navi, not in the lower foot at all, and not above the pastern joint (all confirmed by multiple different blocks, x-rays and ultrasounds that were all very consistent and pointing towards possible pastern area pain). Vet thinks that whatever is wrong with the left (worse) leg is wrong with the right as they are very similar in clinical signs, but the left is far more upright (in vet's words, "almost vertical"

).
So anyway, although we still don't have a cause, we have a plan. Vet is sending a recommendation report off to insurance to say that she should go off to have MRI and scintigraphy. So pending the insurance people's verdict (which hangs in the balance a bit as I've only had her 10 months, but even if they don't pay or don't pay all, I'll scrape my bank clean if I have to) she will be off hopefully sometime soon and then we may be able to get a clearer picture of where exactly it may be.
Vet seemed pretty positive though, which must be a good sign! I think he was relieved although puzzled that it wasn't navi (as was I after reading through the H&H archives) but we're all pleased to have a plan of action again.
Everyone on my yard is back from RC camp now, and next year's is booked in for 14th April. As long as Maiden is sound enough to go next year I will be happy!
Sorry if bits of this don't make sense, it's all in a jumble in my head!
And thank you to everyone who replied to my navicular post, you were all really helpful!

Glad it's not navicular!

Does sound very puzzling though it sounds like a referral would be a good idea- is it Mike who has been seeing her?

Yup it was Mike, he was quite amusing today as he started using long words and my Mum started looking blank, so he asked if either of us understood what he was on about... well once I'd explained what degree I was doing he was using the longest most complex words I've ever heard! And was completely blanking my Mum! He is really good though, very thorough and not afraid to go back and look over everything again and spend time thinking about it.
Hopefully MRI and/or scintig will show up what x-rays and ultrasounds can't and show us what it is. Fingers crossed.

I think I like him best out of their vets (that I have met). I have had Jill, Bob, Fernando and Lindy and Mike is definately the one I trust most. Gabby came out with Maiden when I picked her up and apparently all the nurses love my horse! They all think she's mega sweet (apart from that apparently she had enough of being nerve blocked and had to be doped

don't blame her really though!)

oh hun, i didnt realise you thought she might have navicular, but at least that has been ruled out now.

You must be desparate to find out what is wrong with her, its really bizarre that they cant find anything.

Have you thought about turning her away for 2months then bringin her back into work slowly if they dont find anything on the MRI?

I will be seriously considering turning her away for six months plus - but only if it's still undiagnosed after MRI and scintig. She's had almost three months lame now as it is, and the six weeks of box rest she's had has only made her worse. Hence why, when the vet gave us the two options of 1) turning away for six months and seeing what happens, or 2) MRI and scintig, we went for option 2! There's no point in hanging around (my Mum has just popped down to the vet's to drop off our claim form to be sent with the vet report, muttering about how slow 1st class post is!

I suppose looking on the bright side, at least we now know that nothing is wrong with her left foot (as we have the x-rays and ultrasounds to prove it), as was there nothing wrong with her airways when we had her scoped the other week for her bleeding other than a few tiny melanomas. So there's nothing the matter apart from the fact that she's hobbling round!

Fingers crossed anway, and I shall keep you posted!
