A while ago I posted about my horses fear of sheep, well over the past few days all seemed to be going well and he actually accepted the sheep in his field and really seemed to have got over his fear.
Today the sheep were moved and a man and his sheep dog went in to move them from the field a short distance from my horses field. All of the horses got a tad stressed as the sheep ran in one big flock, as they normally would.
I was in just finishing Williams stable and the YO's hubby came over and said he thought one of the horses had jumped the fence and was the wrong side, I shot out and with a great sinking heart saw that it was my boy and he was standing stock still in a crop field in a very odd position, I ran and got his head collar and ran up to find him them other side of a very damaged fence, he saw me and gave a pitiful neigh, I checked his back legs, nothing, then front legs and felt sick. He had the biggest laceration to his armpit imaginable he did not want to move and was clearly in immense pain. We managed to take down the fence and it took half an hour to get him to his stable which normally takes 2 minutes.
The vet arrived and confirmed he was severely injured so much so that he had gas under his skin and the wound was approx five inches deep and eight inches long, the vet could put his whole hand up to his wrist into it.
After 3 1/2 hours the vet managed to put five layers of stitches in and has bandaged the whole leg for support in case it is fractured as Wills just does want to use it, we will know in a couple of days whether it is just the soreness and bruising from the wound.
He is now cross tied in his house until Thursday when we will know more so please send good vibes as I'm just so sad about the whole incident.

OMG that's terrible - huge hugs and healing vibes on there way. Please let us know how you get on

Loads of good vibes for you.
Horses are amazingly resilient to this kind of injury, I have my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery

My thoughts are with you & your boy. Fingers crossed that he will be ok.

I lost my girl a couple of months ago due to an accident in her field, so I know what you're going through. I really hope this situation ends better than ours did.

Good luck!

Gosh, that's awful - i'm so sorry. Fingers crossed everything's ok and he makes a full recovery. Maybe speak to forum member 'debradley' - her horse has also sustained massive injuries lately - you could swap healing tips! Good luck. Thinking of you both. x x x

Sending you loads of healing vibes. My friends pony did a similar thing, but to a back leg - just missed the femoral artery amazingly. The vet got his arm up to the elbow in the wound. It wasn't stitchable, so he was just put on antibiotics and it washed out. He was incredibly sorry for himself, but within a week had jumped out of his stable! He healed with hardly a scar, and no lameness at all - and he had cushings so healing can be affected.

Thinking of you.

I know what its like when you see your own horse in distress, and you feel so hopeless, it wrenches your heart out.
Sending you all good wishes and healing <<<<<vibes>>>>>

Oh poor boy! Poor you, big hugs, horrendous shock.

A couple of years ago my friends horse had a wound that sounds very much like this, huge, gaping, and so deep my hand was halfway to the elbow staunching blood, from just one side of his chest, underneath his armpit to just before his girth if I remember correctly. He went to hospital and they spent hours sewing him up, stayed there for a bit, and was back showing at the Royal Welsh the following year. sarah_and_perry cared for him so she knows more about it than I do.

Keeping my fingers crossed, and sending healing vibes your way.

Good Luck.

sorry to hear this is awful for you and your horse but dont despair as long as no breaks ect i have had two horses in the past with similar injuries and nursed both back to full health not even a mark takes time as cut has to heal from inside out good luck
