pony's good had different vet and a very odd experience Delia was (the grey) was stood tied up when she started looking really worried and kept turning around and acting up couldn't see any thing went to groom her tail and a big larvae came out her bottom called vet as i was feeling rather worried and she had some blood around her bottom also, any hows new vet said he want to come see this larvae and wouldn't charge! turns out they both got bot lots of bot larvae in there guts the vet was impressed as he had never see them come out like they came out of Delia (he saw her pass one) they where still alive we think what happened was the strong wormer upset them that's why they appeared. so its a lesson why to remove bot eggs on your horses legs! Both pony's both come from same place so they had it as bad as each other and explains why they both had colic (new vet treated the colic) the link below explains about the bots if any ones interested!

Or just worm them regularly.......

Really pleased they are both doing well. It's funny, I haven't seen bot eggs on my horses' legs for some years and thought perhaps there weren't so many bot flies about anymore - maybe they are worse in some areas...

Ah, sorry if i've misunderstood. Although it doesn't sound as if pony has been on a programme particulary. But i could have the wrong end of the stick.

I had never seen them before moving down south and last year was fairly revolted to see them on my precious pony! Got a scraper to remove them. No sign of evil yellow dots this year so far

[/ QUOTE ] i don't think you have got the wrong end of the stick at all. my understanding is they have never been worm and then she wormed with pramox and made them ill.

I have to say that the picture of the coloured pony was a good example of what a wormy pony looks like.

these Dartmoor hill pony types are known to be really scanky at this time of year..i bought 2 myself at the New Forest sales 1st may..

i wouldnt dream of giving them, or the Newfies for that matter, wormer straight from the tube/packet as that is just asking for colic..

i dilute the required dosage in 1 pint of hot water, making sure it completely mixed in, then give it to the foals/yearlings over 4 days...

this way their little tummies and intestines aren't given a shock of chemicals.

from the 4th day i count 12 days then they are wormed with pure paste on that day...
i've never had one suffer from "wormer induced" colic before...

also wouldnt use Strongid/Pramox/Panacur for anything under 15 months of age as a first time wormer...far too "scouring" for them..

Well at least you know what it is now. Your original post really woried me, especialy the bit about blood around the anus. Hopefully know they have been wormed they will pick up nicely.

I'm a bit concerned as too why you have not put these ponies on a worming program a bit sooner, as you appear to have had at least one of them for several months. Maybe a little chat with your vet over worming programs for the future may be a good idea, as this time you have been lucky, next time you may not.
