Spoke to the vets this morning and they said that both Sirrius and Amber were doing well. I also arranged to pick them up tomorrow lunchtime.

About an hour ago, the surgeon called me to say that the joint is still infected. A course of antibiotics is unlikey to help and flushing out the joint again will have a slimmer chance of sucess compared to the first one.

So basically he said there is nothing they can do and I should have Sirrius put to sleep.

I feel numb and sick and keep thinking what else could I have done.

Oh no i'm sorry.sending you the hugest of hugs. Not a very Happy Birthday for you is it!.

How awful, all I can think is surely they must be able to try something, I expect that is all that is racing through your mind. Sending you big hugs can't believe what you are having to go through. More Hugs on their way.

Thank you all.

Well my OH phoned the vet back (I'm not in a speaking frame of mind atm).

Anyway he has asked them to x-ray the joint which can tell us if the infection is in the bone or in the blood.

If it's in the bone then there is nothing they can do and the fairest thing to do would be to have Sirrius put to sleep.

If it's in the blood, they will have to flush the joint out 2/3 times and put him on stronger antibotics. They didnt want him on the uber strong ones at first is because they can upset foals bodies.

However, this only gives a 20-30% chance of full recovery and will be very expensive. My YO is being very supportive and has offered to help out, she is on her way to the vets now as she lives close by and will get second, third and fourth opinions if nessecary.

Apparently they gave Sirrius an antibiotic shot into the joint this morning and took a fluid sample at the same time. This shows that the infection is worse than when a sample was taken on Thursday. They dont normally test the fluid again but did as they was giving the shot anyway. Part of me wishes they didnt.

Vet doubts that antibiotics will be strong enough to clear the infection on their own.

I am very very sorry to read this. It's such a very difficult condition to try to treat but I was hoping so badly that they would be able to, for you and your little lad.

It's heartbreaking....it really is.

Sorry,
Tia x

I am really sorry to hear your news. I had everything crossed for a happy ending.

My girl had gentomicin beads inserted into her knee, post surgical flushing, to stave off any remaining infection pockets. Joint infections are so hard to treat. I doubt there was anything you could have done to alter the outcome. It's just the luck of the draw I'm afraid.

How utterly heartbreaking for you. I'm so very sorry.
