Update on socialisation/training class dilemma. .

Quick update as I went to the doggy fun park today, as weather was nice and I was child free..

There were up to about 20 dogs in the small dog agility area, thank goodness its huge, and we stayed for ages..

Lily met so many dogs, it would have taken a month of walking in the forest for her to meet that many, and apart from a rather large and boisterous German Shepherd puppy who bowled her over a couple of times and scared her, all the others were lovely :) I did find another larger adult dog which she played with after that btw so we didn't end on a bad note, as unlike with the pup its owner was watching and intervened with a 'gently' command if it was getting too excited :)

I called her over lots of times for either a fuss or a treat (if no other dogs watching) and we also did all of the tiny agility equipment at one stage or another. Even the jumps once or twice as they were only 15-20cm high.....

Good news. I can't let my young lab play with puppies as she goes mental and terrifies them, but our old lab plays beautifully. I am glad she had a nice outing.

we have no dog play park by us but from what i have read about them,there are 2 types of users-those like you who moniter and interact with their dog and others who just use it for a free for all(not good)

i belong to a very good agility club,the foundation class for young dogs spend months with sets of wings and cones and tuggytoys before they even see a pole and when it is introduced,it is on the ground.it is so important to get the basics right even if you think you are going to do it just for fun.

The jumping wasn't intended honestly, but if she saw me step over it, she popped over too... Honestly were tiny 15cm, stepping down a kerb would be bigger lol.

cahill - is there a 'proper' way to introduce agility equipment, just in case I pursued this in the future.. I held a treat in front of her to step up onto the wee boxes, and the walkway thing (whatever its called), and the only thing she wasn't keen to do was the see saw which is fair enough.

the Aframe,dog walk and seesaw are called the `contact` equipment.
mine do the 2on/2off method,that is,they stop at the bottom with the 2 back feet on the equipment (this is good for me as not being a fast runner,gives me time to catch up and learning this method will hopefuly stop the dog `jumping the contacts` (you may know that it is faulted in comps if the dog doesn`t have a paw on the coloured area)

you can start training for this by just using a mat or piece of wood and is called `hind end awareness` and a plastic lid for the dog to target.

i`m no expert but belong to a very good club.
the end result for a trained dog is to power down the DW/AF aiming for the bottom and waiting for the `release`

i have overcome my seesaw troubles,s.saw needs careful introduction and a helper.

as for the jumps,we started off with just the wings and throwing the toy forward to achieve `drive` and when the dog can do waits,a tuggy toy and the owner runs and the dog follows then arc shapes can be introduced.

i am sure some1 else will be able to come along with more info but this is what i have learnt x

some people want short cuts and say they want to just do a bit for fun but this is not good because the bug will get you and then you will wish you had done all the proper basics :)

Thanks cahill.... You are v kind to go to so much trouble. I never imagined the contact equipment was taught like that...
