they seem to be going down a bit, vet said to leave them alone as he's not lame, and moves really really well and they dont appear to be bothering him.

Here's a pic:

anyone seen anything like this before? He's just a yearling and had a perineal strip aged 9 weeks and a hernia repair op a few weeks ago, he was very small until he was turned out at the end of may and he's grown over 2 hands which is a lot in that space of time for a yearling I think? Wondered if it might be something to do with strain on the joints with him growing so much so fast, although it doesn't affect any of his other joints.

My friends yearling had exactly the same, it was because of the feed she was feeding making her yearling grow to fast.

Dont ask me what feed it was as i dont know! But shes taken it off the feed and the yearling is fine again now and its joints are back to normal.

I would get a second opinion.
I have only ever bred one foal that had a problem and she was very premature .
She had no problems as a foal but as a yearling got a swelling similar but not as bad as yours on one front leg.
No lameness or anything thought perphaps a knock so treated it as one but no change.
Vet exrayed because of her history poor foal then fast growing yearling.
There was a very small lesion on her cartlidge that was treated immediately .
It went down and was never again a bother.
The best test to try is to see whether the swelling will push through from the front of the fetlock to the bit round the side where the tendons and ligaments are.
If it will then i would get someone to check the joint out.
Better caught early and all that.
Judgeing by the picture it already looks like ther is swelling in both areas.
