Just thought i'd update you on my mare that has a tendon sheath injury after being kicked. well shes gone to the bone, has torn ligaments and her tendon sheath but has missed the main tendon. The wound is on her hind leg just above her heel. she got her leg flushed 3 times and has a bandage on which has to be changed everyday, shes getting an injection of penicilin and another injection in her cathetor every day. shes not very lame so I brought her home lastnight, after being at the vets 8days its cost me £2300! even though they origionally said it would cost around £700 however she is very lame this morning, think it might be because shes stressed being in on her own, she is a very stressy mare who weaves and was quite hyper yesterday so think shes just over done it. Her injury is healing slowly as its been a week and 2 days and its still weeping synovial fluid and isnt repairing well due to its location. So fingers crossed, what does everyone think about the lameness this morning?

I would be concerned about the lameness this morning if she was previously not lame - especially if it's being aggrevated by her being on her own.

Do you have the option of having someone in with her to help keep her quiet??

no not really, i would put my mare in next to her but she has a foal at foot and its not fair to keep them in. She's not too bad this morning about being on her own, think its coz she ate all of her hay overnight, so got bored, will give her lots of hay tonight and some toys to keep her happy

just spoke to the vet and said to put her on bute for 3days, if theres no change then she might have an infection in her wound as the discharge is yellow. said to bring her in again for further examination but that isnt an option. so she might have to be PTS

i cannot afford for her to go to the vets and recieve another bill in a weeks time for £2300. This horse isnt insured as i had her less than a week before she did this. That isnt an excuse i know but there were other factors which i cant go into as to why she wasnt insured

Fair enough. I hadn't appreciated that. Although you should be able to get her treated at home.
