Long story short, but we got the rugs nicked off our ponies backs in the field as well as all of our hay, inc what they were eating!! At that point we moved our 3 youngsters to a youngster friendly livery yard. We offered to take Dakota but his owner refused as she couldn't afford to lose the livery. She would have lost less than a fiver! It broke my heart leaving him and everyone was in tears taking our babies away listening to him screaming :(

Anyway, long story short, he was on his own for about 48 hours. We kept checking him and he was in a hell of a state. I finally tracked his owner down by staking the field out! and she cried crocodile tears said how awful it was, so we arranged to take him to the youngster friendly livery yard as soon as we could get the wagon there. In the meantime I brought my foal over, hes at a yard within walking distance. So in a blizzard conditions we walked my foal down a 1:5 hill thats iced over.

2 days ago when i went to the field Dakotas owners were there, as was a local "bottom feeder" dealer. i told her that I knew someone who would buy him and would give him a fab home. I asked her to let me know if he was going and to give me notice to take the foal back to the yard or get my other horse down there for company. She agreed to contact the 3rd party to arrange them buying him, and has ignored me point blank ever since. She contacted the 3rd party to tell them they could have him so long as he was gone today, they couldnt pick him up due to the atrocious weather here :(

Dakota was removed this morning leaving my weanling alone!! Luckily he was pretty chilled and I left work straight away and took my riding horse down the hill to keep him company, as we wouldn't have got the foal up the hill. I barely got down it!

Anyway, poor Dakota has now got a hideously uncertain future in the hands of a dealer who regularly puts his horses through Holmfirth Sales :(

This wont mean anything to most people, but until I started typing this I was considering going round to the owners house with a baseball bat! Than you HHO for listening to my rant. Now the rage has gone I can bawl my eyes out for a bit and hopefully sleep :( There is scum in the world who shouldn't own a pot plant never mind a horse!!

Poor you, can you keep an eye out for the dealer selling him & watch the sales?

It sounds like you have done everything (above & beyond) you could do, try not to worry.

Its heart breaking :( The private buyer is going to ring the dealer tomorrow to see if she can buy him still. Hopefully he wont ask stupid money as hes had him less than 24 hours, and the market is crap for uncut rising 2 year olds that are going to make 14.2hh

I regularly go to York and will keep an eye out, and have enough money in my pocket to buy him but I cant stomach Holmfirth no matter the situation :(

O I am sorry to hear that. I remember your original post. You've done your absolute best. Here's hoping nothing awful happens.

and as for leaving your weanling, well, words fail. I'd be beyond annoyed, believe you me. At least this person doesnt own horses anymore, seems to be the only good thing to have come out of this situation. I'm glad your weanling is ok,it beggars belief what some people will do.

I didn't do enough, no where near :( I could have just loaded him up and took him to the yard. The worst they could have done was had me arrested. The person who wanted to buy him is at the yard we took our babies to. I wouldnt have gone to prison, and at least he would be safe now instead of facing a hideous future :(

Oh god i feel for you i had horses dumped in a field next to me neglected and my biggest regret is not taking one of the worst i still think about it, but you did everything in your power far beyond in fact it is very hard when you are personally involved every day.

You were trying to stay on the right side of the law and be decent it is unfortunate there is always awful people who have horses who dont care for their outcome from what you have written you should be proud of yourself you have gone out of your way and been compassionate to a horse that was not yours you could not have done more without compromising yourself and like me you probably will next time.

Maybe you can track the horse down at a sale and not all buyers at sales are awful i buy and sell a little bit private and at sales and i can truly say i love all my horses and hate selling them so you never know but you did your best and that is all you can do.

aww thats just awful - no wonder you are upset and angry

I agree, staying on the right side of the law sometimes does no one anyone any favours (the law s an ass as they say) ......I have to say I didnt when it came to some puppies that were neglected & abused, but thats a different story

Hopefully, fingers crossed, the dealer will sell to your friend who wants the foal................although maybe going to the auction isn't such a bad idea if he doesnt sell

I don't know what I can do to help, but if I can I will

Good Luck x

It could end well, maybe dakotas owner just wanted definate rid of?Dealer might have been a definate way out ?If your friend rings and goes to view possible youngsters and sees him im sure itll end well

Just a quick update. We tracked down the dealer and asked to buy him. I have no use for him and really, really don't want another one, but if I could have afforded to buy him, geld him, handle him and have a chance of selling him to a good home I'd have taken the financial and time hit. The sodding dealer wants £750. I'm pretty sure he paid £150!! Round here he wouldnt be worth £750 as a 3 yr old, riding away quietly so I've had to decline :( The person I had lined up to buy him isnt prepared to spend that sort of money as they can buy better for less than £200 at the minute.

I've been sitting for the last hour doing my sums and there is just no way I can do it without skimping on my 3 :( If anyone attends a sale and sees a Dakota, 13hands ish of 18 month old, LW coloured colt cob with a big white face, and an attitude problem, going through the ring for less than £400 then buy him and I'll buy him off you! He may well be put through the ring as older as he looks very mature and 'finished'. I'm hoping the snow stops the dealer getting to Holmfirth and he'll put him through York instead! I've put some pics on below:

for anyone who attends sales on a regular basis in the North East then PM me and I'll give you a contact number in case you see him :)

He is stunning, if I see him, I will buy him, and let you know.

I am getting more and more disheartnend with the way people treat all animals that we have ' exploited' for our own use, it is a privaledge not a right!!!!!
