thanks for all your help folks, we never found out what the problem was. by the time we got up (6am) on saturday she had stopped dribbling! No sign of it since, and she's not drinking any more than before, and that's even with having done 2 ten mile walks this weekend!
Spoke to the vet, and he reckons, from our description, that it was probably a piece of something stuck in the gum or between teeth, and that brushing her teeth dislodged it before it caused more problems.
