For anyone who saw my posts earlier in the year, my 18 year old mare who had an operation for septic pedal osteitis went on her first post-operative hack yesterday. I've debated whether posting this will cause my luck to change and her to have a relapse tomorrow, but I'm just going to cross everything and hope!
After a month of box rest on ACP, bute, insulin medicine and shod, I ended up ignoring everything the vet said and listening to everyone else (farrier, trimmer, people on here, self, husband etc) and took her shoes off, took her off all the drugs and turned her out. She lived out in her Old Macs boots 24/7 for the first month, then went onto boots at night and bare during the day as her soles and frogs got very squishy and horrible (although she never actually had thrush). As the hole grew out and she stopped needing bandages, I started using Keratex hoof putty to stop anything going up into it, and now it has nothing. She has been totally sound in the field now for three weeks or so, including walking over stones on the way to her stable, hence her returning to work. Not sure how she feels about it, I think she thought she had retired!
