Just wanted to update you on the Tildren post that I posted last week in the Veterinary section as I was concerned about my lovely horse going into the veterinary clinic for his third Tildren infusion.

I dropped him off in the morning and he settled into the usual stable he finds himself in when visiting the clinic. You could put him on the moon and as long as he has a hay net he’d be happy! I got a phone call around one pm to say he had had the treatment and was slowly coming round from the sedation and I could pick him up about 4pm.

When I picked him up he was very quiet but as this was his third treatment I knew he would be knocked around a little by the drugs so expected him to be like this. When I took him home (20 minute journey in trailer) he went straight into his stable which I had prepared earlier giving him a nice deep shaving bed. Initially he stood in the corner looking very miserable and wouldn’t eat polo’s or his haylage net so I guessed he felt a little poorly. I intended to go back up later that evening and check him so I left the yard to go home. An hour before I was due to go back up to the yard I got a phone call from my friends saying they were worried about him and he was lying down looking colicky so I rushed there but by the time I got there he’d stood up again and was starting to pick at his net. He hadn’t passed any droppings but as he’d had about ½ a haylage net all day I guessed he might not until the next day. I decided to go home for the night about 10pm and was at the yard at 6am the next day where I found him with his head over the stable door calling out for his breakfast and the stable full of pooh! What a relief. He had also had loads of wees which he always does after Tildren for some strange reason and his stable was awash with it. He galloped round his field when he got turned out, so I decided to take him to the combined training later that day that I had pre-booked into and the vet had said would be okay to do. We won the Novice 27 with 64.6% and came 4th in the elementary 44 (error of course). Was really pleased with him. Yesterday I did some grid work with him and he jumped very nicely so I was delighted. I am so glad that he had the Tildren and although the side effects are not very nice they only seem to last a few hours at most. Interestingly my friends horses have had Tildren and they have never had any side effects.

Haven't read your previous post but I bet you are relieved that he is ok now.
They do worry us don't they!

My lad also had exactly the same side effects as your lad. I couldn't believe the state of his bed the first time he had it. The bed was absolutely sodden!! Glad your boy is ok & a very well done on winning

Hi guys, yes you are right Miss W they do worry us!

Neddynesbitt - Thanks! I'm interested in you saying your horses bed was soaked too, I was beginning to think my horse was the only one who reacted to this drug with any negativity! I know of at least three people who have given their horses this treatment, two of whom are on our yard and none of their horses had any side effects. I was beginning to question whether my boy was a bit wimpy to be honest

I was really worried about my lad the first time & rang the vet who was also concerned. She came out & checked him over as he was really dull & listless, not eating & seemed really depressed. Vet said she had two cases where the horses became very depressed for a while. My boy was really rough for 24 hours but like you I was so relieved to see him looking over his door the next morning screaming for his breakfast.

I was prepared the next time but he didn't seem so rough but was definitely not right although the wee situation was just as bad

My lad is a real tough nut normally so it was a terrible shock to see him looking so sorry for himself but he was soon back to his usual cheeky self

My boy has also just had his 3rd tildren injection and he wee'd for England for about 2 weeks after it.... its the only side affect he's had. I mentioned this to my vet and she said no one else had mentioned this before, so its good to hear he's not the only one!!

Most horses tend to wee a lot that night post tildren, more due to the sedation and also the excess fluid given to dilute the tildren. Also havent known any that have wee'd more for 2 weeks. Glad its helping your horse.
