Horse is now home from hospital!!

He had a steriod inj in his fetlock last Thursday. Unfortunately Friday morn he was virtually unable to walk due to an infection that had crept in. Loaded him straight up and we were at the vets by 7.30 ( vets an hour away!!) Had spoken to the vet on route who met us there. He sedated him and took some fluid off his fetlock, tested it and it showed fairly high white blood cell count. Vet decided he needed to flush joint etc to get rid of infection. He then went on the explain horse would be put under GA and all the pros and cons. At this point I was feeling very sick!! They said they would ring as he was about to go in and once he had woken up. Due to him having had some hay they waited till the afternoon to do op. By 4.15pm they still hadn't rung so I phoned and was told all went well and he was just waking up!! No phone call before hand but in hindsight probaly better as I would have just worried!! They called back about 30 mins later and said he was back in his box and all was well!! Phew!! He was supposed to stay in till tomorrow but he was doing so well they let him come home yesterday.

Today I had a scare tho. He wasn't pooing as well as normal so rang vet who advised limited hay and keep eye on him. She said they would come out but he wasn't in any distress just not pooing. He did 2 over night, then nothing from 5.30 till 12.00. As I put phone down from vet he pooed!!And has done a couple more since. Vet did say a stay in horspital could upset them and slow the gut, so not overly worried now but will keep checking on him

.....Now just got to get through 6 weeks box rest!!!

The very best of luck Charlie007 (we have been corresponding by PM).

They like to scare us don't they! I hope he continues to improve. One of ours got mild colic after a horsepital stay for a foot problem. He was fine after 24 hours and they thought it was the starving for the GA followed by all the upset and then a journey home that just slowed his gut down.
Hopefully he will now progress in the right direction with no more hiccups!

We were told after one of mine had a GA to feed soaked hay and warm bran mashes for the first 24 hours and then soaked hay but gradually introude usual feed over the mext three days. She was rushed in with an ovarian tumour which necssitated removal of her ovaries. It is very scary when things go wrong. Hope it goes on okay now.

Thank you for your replies.

I need an early night tonight. I think I went a bit overboard on the checking thing and checked him every 2 hours!! He is still not pooing as much as before, but as a few of you have said the GA, travel, general upset has probably slowed his gut down, he is looking bright and well in himself and has no other classic signs of colic so hopefully nothing to worry about! (me not worry? Yeah right!!). I suppose the antibiotics could also be slowing him up.

Packwood- yes I thought it better to feed soaked hay aswell, if nothing else just to get fluid into him. He is having a very sloppy handul of feed twice a day also.

Misst, yes they bloody do!! Not sure I can take much more!!

applecart14, thank you for your kind words in your pm x
