So I asked the YO when I went up today to give me more details on the complaint about my "galloping up and down the road sending the neighbour's horses crazy". Turns out it was the horses 1/4 mile away that I could barely see and the neighbour didn't actually see me, but was alarmed by the SOUND OF MY HOOFBEATS!

Apparantly though this neighbour has never been alarmed enough to phone her before and is quite a calm sort. Allegedly.

I am now seriously wondering if I have slipped into some parallel universe. Where cantering on a soft bit of lane at 3pm for what could have been no more than a minute can alarm someone so much. I know its a quiet part of the world up here, but FFS!

That does sound crazy! I just had to say I've only just realised what FFS stands for (not used to forum language yet!). Seen it in a couple of posts and been confused but at the end of your paragraph it just made total sense!

How can this person be sure it was you anyway? This is unbelievable, what the hell are they all on where you are. You must be really peed off about it all.

Perhaps she wears something distinctive like a high collared cloak?

LOL! I might just go out one night and actually gallop up and down the same bit of lane, wearing black of course. And then deny all knowledge of it. Said neighbour will come across as totally neurotic.

But clearly I would'nt make a very good highwayman as I didn't muffle my horse's hooves!

I did try to point out to YO today that it was all rather silly and that no reasonable person could possibly see this as a genuine complaint, but she was very serious about it and asked me please not to upset her neighbour as she had to live near her.

Aaagh! Honestly, I know I harp on about it, but I have lived in quite a few different parts of the country and abroad, and I have never come across so many bleaty, whiny, bitter, grumpy, rude people as here. I do think you can characterise areas, as I guess people adopt similar behavioural patterns to their parents, sisters, brothers, friends, etc.. I have seen this sort of pattern of pretending to be very fragile and put out at really quite normal things before, its like they build themselves up to a state of outraged hysteria so they can have a good moan. For goodness sake, when I first moved here, my 2 spinster neighbours sent me letters complaining about me. My offence - getting tradesmen in to install a new kitchen and bathroom in accordance with a building warrant. Apparantly the previous owner of my flat, who died of old age, was a much more ideal neighbour than me, as she barely left the flat! The other one wrote to me, and I quote "You are now living in a private block of flats in a prime residential area in the West End of Aberdeen. We do not appreciate ongoing disruption here".

Aberdeen! Now I understand everything.

You need to buy a cloak...get your farrier to pop your horse's shoes on backwards, carry a sickle, ride in the twilight (aka 'gloaming') and visit the complainant...and perhaps your two Victoresque neighbours too.

Nah, its just this part. Perfectly normal in the central belt. I was even a student in Dundee for 5 years and loved it. Honestly I moved here really open minded, very excited about moving to a new city and new job, etc.. A year later and I cannot wait to get away. If they dont want people like me to form this sort of opinion of them, then they should'nt act this way. On the plus side, I have enough entertaining dinner party stories about their rudeness to last me a lifetime!

PMSL at this. Jeez you must wonder where the hell you had landed! I would have been tempted to write back to say "Exactly. So could you and your other cronies please stop causing all this disruption". She would probably have choked on her Andrews liver salts after that... Oh and tell her to take the carrot from up her backside at the same time.
