Don't know if anyone saw my last post but had the vet out yesterday as Penny was lame on her off fore (I thought due to mudfever) and then I noticed loads of bumps along her rug neckline one of which was really sore.

Aaanyway, vet said the lameness was due to her mudfever (yay for me for correct diagnosis)... however, as I was grooming her before the vet got there I noticed more scabby areas higher up her back legs. Like flat scabs that come off really really easily but bleed slightly. When I pointed these out to the vet, together with the bumps (which had gone down slightly) on her neck she said she had a fungal skin infection

So she was given an antibiotic injections, has antibiotics for her feed, has a powerful hydrocortizone (sp?) cream to help with the mudfever and a fungicidal bath to have every 3-4 days. The long and short of it is, I've tried researching fungal infections but can't really figure out exactly what it is she's got. Its not ringworm as its in patches of scabs rather than rings. Just wondering if anyone else has had this and if they know what it could be. Also, is this going to mean she's going to have a really crappy summer coat this year

Penny is feeling very sorry for herself now as she's in isolation and I've spent the morning cleaning and disinfecting things :S Daren't go near anyone elses horse till this has cleared up.

Chocolate for getting this far.

My girl got a fungal infection last year on her back legs - a combination of mudfever bacteria, standing in the mud and being damp all the time.
She got the same treatment as yours - antibiotics, cream (flamazine) and maleseb shampoo.
The fungus are probably ones that are normally on the skin that have took advantage of the immune system being compromised by the mud fever - bit like athletes foot on us!

From what I can remember her scabs cleared up really quickly, and she wasn't left with any bald bits.

Hope Penny's legs and scabs clear up soon x

My mare has scabby spotty type things on her neck, about six and when you pick the scab off there seems to be a lump of pus (sorry!) is this similar to your horse? I've been washing them off with hibiscrub and now imaverol

I have heard from other sources that human athletes foot cream is good for it too.

Lordy: her fungal scabs don't really have any puss underneath them and they are very flat as opposed to the mudfever scabs which tend to be a bit thickers. It sounds like your girl has got rain scald/rain rot which is the same as mudfever just on different parts of the body. Try a hydrocortizone cream on it twice a day and that should help it.

Sounds a bit like rainscald to me. My chestnut got it badly on his neck this winter (and in my experience chestnuts seem to get a lot more scabby than other colours). I was so fed up with cleaning him up and putting cream on and he wasn't too fussed either. I ended up feeding him something from Pegasus Herbs called Herbal Skin Mix. It cleared him up totally and I haven't seen mud fever on him since which I found incredible. Definite convert to the stuff!
