Are there any disadvantages to having a 3.9 tonne box, as opposed to 3.5 tonne? I'm considering upgrading mine and I'm wondering what things I should consider.

If you are going to a 3.9t like 4faulter says you would need a lorry licence - however its hardly worth it, I would either buy a 7.5t or a 5/6t lorry instead they are all roughly the same to drive and you would be able to have some living.

I can't imagine there would be much of a resale market on 3.9t lorries

A 3.5 lorry only needs to go to a Class 6 MOT station for its annual inspection. Anything over this must go to a Commercial Vehicle Testing Station.

An 18 year old with a current driving license can drive a 3.5 Ton but anything over this they would require an HGV Licence.

There is a conversion kit for changing a 3.5 ton to a 3.9 ton but the vehicle then needs to be upgraded through the DVLA.

Hope this helps

all good food for thought too. The licence thing won't effect me (it feels like I've had one since the beginning of time as I'm an oldie!), but it could effect the re-sale value I guess.

Is it right that for those of us with longstanding licences, we can drive up to and including 7.5 tonne on our standard licences?

Yes you can drive upto 7.5t pre 1997 (?)

You are actually better off taking your lorry to the ministry to get it MOT'd rather than a private garage, as they don't make any money out of failing you (no workshop attached to the side) and try to pass a lorry rather than fail it
