My horse is super sharp and spooky. He shys alot at stuff and swerves and sometimes spins. Unfortunately I have damaged my back somehow attributed to his spooking and swerving. Its been bad for about 6 weeks and i have had 2 physio appointments and not ridden for 2 weeks (the first 4 weeks was just walking and trotting as canter was hidiously painful with spasms) so it felt really good this week no pain at all so i rode today and still really good even after canter. I got off to collect the poo from the school geeling really happy i can finally rise properly again and the wally spooked really flamboyantly almost.knocking me over and in the process jolted my back again. Now its really sore again i feel like crying ? ?. Is there such thing as a upper back support? My horse is fit and going so well and its so fustrating. My instructor has been riding him for me once a week whilst i can't have a lesson :(
Any suggestions?
My physio mentioned me getting xrays if its still not better this week so just about to message her. Physio thinks maybe a secondary symptom from my neck as its so tight as is my entire upper back.
Am not so sure

I'd see a GP at this point.

I was basically blown over during a gale. I had pain in my neck, shoulder blade and upper back. Saw a GP who sent me off to the hospital for a neck xray.

Thankfully all clear so had physio for suspected whiplash but the physio wouldn't touch me until I had a clear xray.

ETA the other thing about seeing a GP is that they'll probably give you some decent anti inflammatory!

Webt to see the GP. Coincidentally my eczema has flared up probably due to me being a little stressed.
She wanted to run some bloods to make sure no rhumatoid going on. Bloods all normal and she has put my on steroids for eczema and wants me to tell her if i have any improvement with back too (which there isnt! My partner has rhumatoid arth so pretty clued up on it) she wont x ray as said they wont see anything duw to the location. Told me to keep up with physio and i am to check back in with her tomorrow. Shes leaning toward a pull or tear. She said she may book me in for an MRI but then said there wont be much they can do about it anyway?
I rode today and came off feeling really rough and back so so sore as i thought back was feeling okay! . My bad completely my own fault aggrivated it again
Seeing physio again wednesday.
Not sure if i should stop ridong for a few weeks?
My horse is super fit and worked so so hard with him aiming for our dressage outings and i really dont want him to lose fitness. So i just turn him away for a little holiday too? My instructor can ride him 1 x per week do i stick to this for the time being? I can walk and trot innthe school hes less likely to spook like he does on a hack
Really stuck and tbh its making me a bit sad that we have to stop ?

I would see a McTimoney chiropractor. They don't do any aggressive manipulation, just gentle pushes and shoves. It always amazes how so little apparently done actually really helps. The one I used to go to only trained as one after having a treatment herself, she said it seemed like magic.

It sounds like your back is screaming at you to rest it up for a bit. I can understand your frustration when everything else is going well and you just want to keep riding, but you might end up causing a longer term issue that forces you into needed a break from riding for a much longer period of time.

They don't lose fitness really for 2-3 weeks, so that's an easy window. I would say that the more I live, learn and see the more I think spooky horses normally have something going on, whether it's mind or body, and some "unravelling" groundwork with bodywork can go some way towards either working out what it could be, or improving it.

For you I would probably see an osteopath or possibly a good McTimoney chiro, some human physios are awesome but many seem to not be. I know it's an injury that you can pin to an event but, even so, we usually break at our weakest point, and I'd recommend Rider Reboot for helping you fix the systems, senses, brain, body - that will have had some part in this. All off horse.

Take these 2-3 weeks as a window to change some stuff up :)
