On the positive, he doesn't have ulcers, vet thinks anaemia is due to poor nutrition/no grass and tapeworm, and the colic probably caused by him eating something he shouldn't have from the hedge. On the negative, he doesn't appear to have any manners left, with people or horses!

He's home now, and is being the most ignorant and bolshy little **** ever. What happened to my well mannered friendly pony? My yard owners are being great, i've been really upset that he's behaving so badly, but they're not blaming him, they're saying it's obviously because he's not been out in company for a few weeks, and not had grass for months, that now he's in company and got grass (pre-grazed by sheep to minimize lami risk) it's all gone to his head.

I was warned by some people at the yard he was on loan at that he was 'getting the better' of the loanees, but when i asked them about it, they just said he was being cheeky, but they were fine. With hindsight all of this could have been avoided, i know, so please don't judge me. I'm just really sad that my pony is such a horror, and poorly, and I'm worried i won't get him back to how he was :(

whinge over, tea and biscuits for all who have read this far :o
 
You will get your pony back to his old self, but it wont happen overnight. With the good management, sorting his medical problems and consistent handling that you provide, he will come right. :)
 
Don't blame yourself, you were checking on him and believed the loaners, he's back where he should be and you will get him back to his old self.

How long was he away?, maybe think of it like fitness and give yourself as long as he was away to get him back in physical and mental shape. Then you'll be realsitic about his progress, if he's been away a year he won't be fixed in 2 weeks.
 
Adopt a zero tolerance rule for him and make his life very black.and white in terms of what he can do and what he must never do. It won't take long for him to get back to good behaviour.

This will come right in time when he feels well is settled and remembers what expected of him.
Although very upsetting its excellent that the health issues are being driven by poor management its a thing that will be easily fixed with good care.
You have done the right thing and your are a good owner you have got your pony home , it just goes to illustrate again how problematic loans can be.
 
Thank you everyone, all very sensible advice and makes me feel much better. Was literally in tears this morning. I am devastated that my usually well mannered pony is behaving like such a bullish brat. I have owned him since he was 3, broken and trained him myself, and lent him to numerous people over the years for pony club rally's, camp and hunting when their pony was lame/they needed a well behaved spare for a friend etc...

Thankfully my yard owner is being an absolute gem about it all too, and being really supportive.

I know it'll take time and patience, but hopefully i'll get him right again xx
 
Its no different to a human really, when you are in pain you take it out on the people around you, and I so know that one myself. So do not be hard on your pony or yourself it will all come right when he starts to feel better again.
