URGENT ADVICE needed please - Lame pony

If a pony was lame and had been on box rest, and the owner inisted on lungeing it daily for half an hour, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS STILL LAME what would you do. And is it normal for a vet to prescribe lungeing and box rest for a lame horse?

Please help. I am seconds away from calling the vet myself (which would make me look like a busybody!)
 
Vet is unlikely to be able to discuss the case with you as you aren't the client. But wouldn't want to lunge a lame horse unless it was for a very specific reason and it was clearly going to be beneficial. It is up to the owner tho to question the vet. Have you told them your views?
 
Doesn't make any sense to me. Box rest & controlled walking out in hand yes but I would have thought lunging was a no. Did the vet maybe say walk out in hand & they think this is a lazier option that would be ok as no rider on? I've known it happen!

If it's anything to do with you then ask the vet, if it isn't then could you play thick & ask the owner why the vet said to do this?
 
Yes, he is a complete novice and said he would prefer to listened to a qualified vet - I told him his horse was lame in the first place, vet said it was sound, asked farrier who said the horse was lame, vet then thinks it is lame, but has advised lungeing and BR? i'M CONFUSED!
 
Sounds like a bizarre situation there FF..


as far as I can see there doesn't seem much point having box rest prescribed and lunging aswell

can you try and speak to the vet directly and even though the vet prob wont be allowed to discuss the horse you could still let him know whats going on and express your concerned for the welfare of the horse.

I actually think the entire situation is becoming a welfare issue for both him, his daughter and his horse !
 
I have read most of your previous posts. I can't ever think of a reason to lunge a lame horse apart from when a horse vet does a full lameness work up and then they are usually lunged on a tight circle. If a horse is lame and on boxrest, surely it should certainly not be lunged. Did the vet say something like "take it for a walk/bit of grass on a lunge line" and novice owner has totally misinterpreted. From your previous posts, it sounds like a proper horse vet should be called in to investigate the lameness fully. Is there any way another vet can give a second opinion - the first vet doesn't sound too good if he couldn't spot the lameness in the first place.
 
I would be stunned to hear of a situation of box rest & lunging together. Vet may very well lunge to assess problem, but that's it.
