Because I just have... I've just put a red (wide) gullet made for Wintecs in my Thorowgood T4 Cob. It seems to fit fine... but just want to make sure there are no big issues as to why not before I try it out at an event tomorrow...

It's not long term - just trying to get this saddle (which I hate) to fit for a week until saddler comes back out having added bits to my WOW to try and get it to fit!

They use a very similar system. The wintecs have a slight curve which might actually be better but that's debateable.

No absolutely not. They are a different shape, and they wouldn't connect anyway - also the wintec gullet will cause a flare in the TG and ruin it and cause a pressure point on the horse.

Genuine wintec gullets have a slight curve in them. Could it be that it is actually a thorowgood one? I have wintec saddles and thorowgood saddles and lots of spare gullets. They are not the same shape.

DON'T DO IT!!!

Aside from the shape being different and sitting in a slightly different place in the saddle, you invalidate your warranty by doing so - so if your tree twists, you're doomed.

+1.

I have a hard enough time getting TG gullets in TG saddles, let alone getting a Wintec gullet in there!

Does yours have a 'kink' in the bottom of the legs like this (the top one)?

The top gullet in that photo is a Wintec, and the bottom is a Thorowgood.

The other thing is wintec have 2 screws thorowgood have 4 so if it slipped because there are not enough screws I would hate to think what damage it could do to the horse. They aren't designed to have wintec gullets.

I certainly wouldn't risk it. The tree shapes are different, as are the gullets (I've recently gone from a Kent & Masters to a Bates so can confirm this!)

My TG saddle only has two screws, same as the previous Wintec I owned. BUT I still wouldn't put a Wintec gullet in a TG saddle, as previously said they are quite different shapes.

Also, if saddler is coming out in a week, stop trying to make a saddle fit for a week. Give the horse a week off and start work again once saddler has been and you have a correctly fitted saddle. Hardly seems worth a weeks work, if that week might mean damage to your horses back in that time.

This saddle was fitted professionally to the horse, its just one size too wide now she's lost some weight (as confirmed by my WOW saddler who looked at it yesterday) hence just changing to the red gullet should make it fit absolutely fine (it's me who hates the saddle and wants to see if we can get my WOW to fit her). I'll buy or borrow a Thorowgood one meantime.

You can alter the gullet plates slightly to fit and get the exact profile of your horse's withers. It's a good technique to use if you have an "in between" sizes horse.
I have used the technique several times and if it's done as instructed does not damage the tree or the gullet plate. If anyone wants the instruction PM me, I have written an article on it.
The manufacturers use a similar technique to make the gullet plates in the first place, Oz (Saddler)
