the ginger one has half pulled off a front shoe; problem is, its not loose enough to pull off completely, its more twisted than off. the inside tip is about 1.5cm away from the hoof wall, and being a particularly pathetic strain of TB he's quite lame on it. Problem is, farrier can't come out til at least monday, and i have no proper tools to remove it myself.

Are there any 'normal' household tools i can use to pull it off? I know i have pliers and a hammer, but i'm at a loss as to what to use as a buffer to loosen the nails with. I have removed shoes before but always had farrier tools (which belonged to the yard i was at - new yard has none)

So, considering he's lame, do i leave it alone until the farrier comes out, or take it off myself? I'm not particularly happy about leaving it as it is, TBH! help!!

I'd take it off if it was my horse.

Can you use the pliers to lift the clenched away from the hoof wall on the side that's attached, if they're not too tightly fixed? You should then be able to lift the foot and gently pull the shoe away from the foot, starting at the heel and working towards the toe?

That's how I managed to gt the shoe off my chap last time we had problems.

IMO use it dont use it stuff - whilst you are looking/going to find some tools, to be safe see if any nails can be removed easily and those that are not going anywhere see if you can push the shoe back on the foot and tape it up with vet wrap/good strong elastoplast to avoid any possible injuries. If you have a double sided hammer (most supermarkets have them at this time of night) you could use the pronged end with the sharp V to snip off the clenches (do this with foot on the ground hopefully it will raise the clenches a bit) and then the pronged end again to pull the nail out from the bottom. Use another nail or flat screw driver to against the clenches and with the hammer on the the nail or flat screw driver try to push the clenches up to be able to snip them off. Good luck!!

Bad luck! I'd definitely get the shoe off.

If you have electrical pliers - small and sharp- then I'd use them to grip the clench, pull it up and straighten it so you can nip it off -then you will be able to get the shoe off. If you havent got small enough pliers then you can do the same job with a big screwdriver and a claw hammer. Its a bit more of a struggle but does work.

Best of luck.
