He is about 8 weeks old. He has uclers all over the inside of his mouth on his gums, cheaks and lips. He is drouling constantly. He wont drink from the mare although he has been trying but it's clearly to painful, we've managed to get a little milk into him this morning with a bottle. He is on antibiotics and we've covered his mouth in Iglu with is for mouth ulers in people, he's clearly very poory, the vet is coming back this evening. Has anyone seen anything like this before? We cant rule out that he may have eatten something in the field but there are 2 other mares and foals in the same padock which are all fine.

Any advice welcome :)

Thanks :) Iglu is similar to Bonjela, the man at the chemist seem to think it would be better. I'm just worried that the ulcers maybe a symptom of something more serious

Well unless he's eaten a rook of stinging nettles which are quite strong just now, it could mean he's deficient in something which has allowed his immune system to play up. One ulcer is bad enough but imagine having as many as he has and if they're down his throat too no wonder it is so painful for him. Do hope you can get him sorted quickly.

Sounds to me like buttercup 'burn'. I have some cream from vet which i use as soon as any of mine look as though they have an ulcer brewing. Tends to hit the youngest and any which arent 100% but can lead to raised glands if not treated.

There are a few buttercups but not many at all, its odd as he's the oldest of all this years foals and he's always been a good strong lookng one. The vet has been back, he's been on a drip, had his antibiotic and some glucose and had blood taken, we'l get the result tomorrow afternoon. He's been tubed so at least he's had a good amount of milk tonight, he does seem bright but is still a very poorly boy

the other thing it could be is oral thrush. if that is the case, the mare's udders will be infected as well, does the skin look normal on them? If it is thrush, the antibiotics will not be helping at all. I'm sure your vet will have considered this though (if indeed it can be a problem with foals, it can be with human babies!).

I hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

bye!
