Lita has a large lump about the size of the 'o' you can make with your first finger and thumb on the inner side of her leg. It is slightly warmer than the rest of her leg, and does not seem to bother her. It will move when you press it but on the inside is a solid lump. She is not lame either. I have never seen anything like this, but it's really worrying.

Does anyone know what this is and what we should do about it? Really freaked out!

could it be an insect bite. My girl got a lump in a similar place last year and i was beside myself thinking it was a tumour, turned out to be a bite that she had a reaction to and it just went away. i felt a bit silly lol.
If you are really worried, best to call the vet. Mine didn't come out, just by my description he knew what it was.

I think it is a fly bite - my mare has several around her shoulders and girth area. The largest was about that size and came up about 3 days ago. The scab fell off today and some discharge but vet said put some antibacterial cream on and fly repellant and see how it goes (he didnt come out just advised over phone). Annoying, as I cant ride her due to 1 being on girth area. I think the Boett fly rug will be going on soon!

I agree - looks like a bite with a bit of local inflammation. You could also try calamine lotion (which you can buy at pharmacies) or human bite ease stuff.
Hope she's not lumpy Lita for long.

I'm probably overreacting about this, but horses are more expensive to fix than humans!

Would there be any clues to indicate if it is a bite or not? It is just a lump and I can't seen any sort of other marks on it.. I'll have at putting something on it - I guess that makes sense, seeing as it does just seem like inflammation.

Turnout/riding wise - do you this could irritate the area further? She's a loon in the field, so I don't want to have to keep her in, especially when she is already enjoying the destruction of her wooden stable with her overactive back-end.

Thanks for the help - I'm so paranoid about this sort of stuff.

It could be a bite but its looks to me like somethng my horse had after being kicked. It could be a haematoma which is a soft blood filled lump, it would just need cold hosing everyday and it will gradually go down. If its starts to get bigger call the vet.

Sometimes there's a tiny scab in the middle, but not always, in my experience

I'd put something soothing on it - even if it doesn't help, it won't do any harm.

As long as she's happy, I'd turn her out and ride her - it'll increase circulation, and help the inflammation reduce more quickly. Of course if she's galloping about the field being eaten by more flies, it may be different.

It could be a haematoma (blood filled bruise after a kick) - either way, she'll be better out and moving around. Basically, if the swelling starts to reduce, then it's fine. If the swelling increases, it may mean there's an infection so get the vet.
Best wishes to poor lumpy Lita again!

My boy had something like this a few years ago, but slightly bigger. We eventually ascertained he had been kicked and was a nasty haemotoma. You are lucky she is sound mine was off work for absolutley ages, but he is a wimp!!

Good luck, hope it is just a fly bite and goes down in a day or two. Best out whichever it is.
