Pony was brought in this afternoon. First time I've had him in a stable, and he proceeded to munch on his straw bed. Argghhh! I've removed all the bits of corn husk, but am at a loss as to what to do! can't get anywhere to get and Jeyes/Stardrops or shavings...

What can I do??

He's already huge, will it hurt him? (he's on a diet!)

It won't hurt him & is less fattening than hay so please don't panic. It sounds gross but can you get some slightly dirty straw & mix in with the top of his bed? It will make it seem a less tasty snack!

Thats what I had to do!!! Ended up changing to shavings.
I wasnt keen on the jeyes fluid route as friends horse years ago still ate it!

Ever heard of YUKKA BED ??? Haven't seen it around for a while but I used to use it on a horse who used to eat his bed. You dilute it with water, then I used a watering can with a rose on the end to sprinkle over any new bedding (obviously don't soak it !!) It worked a treat !!! You used to be able to buy in any feed merchants - you could try googling it.

Dont worry, my mare used to do it. I got her out of it by leaving the bed in a dirty horrible state for a few days. It goes against the grain not to muck out, but I found it was the only way to put her off. She was eating nearly a bale of straw a night, increasing her feed and hay did not make any difference, this mare would eat until she died!
