Right so on monday eve my horse was shod
Tues morn lame, farrier came back out took shoe off and said to poultice it
So we did and redid it again this mroning
Today he is even more lame, and there is heat and swelling in the leg.

I have called the vet and she should be here soon.

I'm thinking it could be an abcess, do you lot have any other suggestions as to what it could be??

Is the heat in the foot or the leg ?

probably an abcess due to the weather wet mud and then hard ground loads of it about at the moment

best wait and see what vet says

Where is heat and swelling? Did anything come out of poultice and did farrier have a dig around. Could you also see any bruising to the sole? Soz so many questions but had to poultice on three sep occasions last winter and can now do with eyes closed. If you can use some lintex with hot water on and put inside nappy then apply to foot and vet wrap. (If you have to turn out put gaffer tape over vet wrap and it will stay on really well!). Good luck with vet.

Abscess or nail bind (nail too close to the sensitive bits in the hoof) sound the most likely to me. Yeah, the vet will tell you straight one way or another.
If it is bruised, I also found that a nice hot kaolin poultice worked wonders on the mare.
Hope it is nothing more serious!
