PLease help, my yearling is chewing her fieldmates tail and making a hell of a mess of it :(

They came in yesterday and she had chewed a chunk off it, we doused it in neat dettol in the hope it would taste foul but it doesnt seem to have done the trick.

Shes only just started doing this in the last 24 hours ( His tail was fine yesterday morning!)
What else can we use to stop her doing it? seperating is not an option, Im going to get a grazing muzzle today but as they are out 24/7 a grazing muzzle is not a long term option, just until we can find something else.

Thanks in advance!!!!! :D

Same thing happened to my horse after his fieldmate took a fancy to his tail- looked like someone had taken scissors to it! (I may have cried a very tiny bit!) Leo bitter spray did the trick. If you get any on your hands though it tastes totally revolting so disposable gloves , possibly even a face mask, as it really is that horrid!

Thanks! Where can I get it from, and excuse me for sounding dense, but what is it??(other than a spray!) haha! never heard of it before

A horse at our yard used to do this to my old boy, and I was told its because of a lack of salt in the diet, so maybe put a salt lick where your yearling could get to it. Not saying it would work as me and the owner of other horse had a falling out about it so seperated the horses before trying the salt lick.

One of our babies did this but we found he wasn't deficient in anything, just bored! In the end we put a few decent size branches and a jolly ball in the field to distract him and it worked a treat - he actually used to throw sticks for himself and fetch them lol
