I may be wrong, but I think HOYS are clamping down on passes this year, and anyone found 'moving them on' could find themselves in hot water

Unfortunately all the "spare" passes seem to have been sold for the popular days before some of the qualifiers had even been held! So each horse has 3 passes, but if you are on a pro yard there is one for you, one for your "pro" one for the "groom" and none at all for your OH/parents etc which is fine, providing there are enough left to buy when you do your entries!

Doesn't your "pro" already to have a pass - not likely that you are the only one on their yard qualified. One pass must be for the rider and one for the owner, if a different person. Unfortunately things have changed over the years partly because of bad behaviour: I know only too well that people, particularly those in the showing classes, were guilty of smuggling extra people by such means as two people with passes coming in then one would go out again taking the other person's pass with them to give to another of their group. They then had the cheek to sit in the seats belonging to the paying public and resent being asked to move out. The other big problem is health & safety regulations which I understand mean that the organisers are only allowed to sell the same number of tickets as there are seats whereas in "the good old days" there was a good size exhibitor section where seating was on an unreserved first come first served basis". With the present ticketing arrangements it is inevitable that there will in fact be lots of empty seats at any one time because ticket/pass holders are elsewhere e.g. at the other arena, in the tradestand area, or because they are only there for either the afternoon or the morning. I see that Friday and Saturday are technically sold out but it's almost always possible to get tickets on the day, so if all else fails, the extra members of your family still stand a chance if getting in. Next time you qualify and are not allowed to buy additional passes, book tickets straightaway!

We have enough passes - was just explaining why there was a problem this year! In the showing classes you can sit where you like with the exhibitor's pass. As the pass is a wristlet you can't swap them that easily. The pass office had extra passes for sale "on the day" last year on a first come first served basis, but it is bit risky to rely on that!

Last year they would only allow the horse and rider working in into the arena. This meant that all the first riddens had to go into work in without parents/instructors being with them. Hope they sorted this out better this year.

The pro is on our yard rather than us being on her yard! By the time you have the driver, the pro, the rider and a couple of grooms if you have 2 or 3 horses going, it is a nightmare and somehow never enough passes. On the first day we have 3 LW hunters with 3 different riders, all to be ready by 7.30am, followed by a MW and a HW. Fortunately, the same rider and owner for the MW and HW.

I never remembered it being so difficult in the "old days", but I imagine you are right with health and safety limiting the number of passes. You are also correct in that the showing people are not usually around after 6pm unless there is a championship they want to watch, and the show jumpers are rarely watching before midday - so there are always loads of spare seats.

Ho hum - at least I have my tickets sorted!

out of interest can a member of Joe Public get a pass? i'm presuming not! I would have done anything to get back to actually see Premy (my old pony) but i'm under impression that you can only get back to stables with pass and you can only get pass either in advance or from stable managers office (or similar) at show, therefore unless I contact his current owner again there is no chance especially as its for saturday!

Will have to be content watching him in the arena seating

Yes, these days theoretically you do need a pass to have stable access, though to be honest I don't know how tight security is at the NEC. Without a pass, I've been able to visit stables at Wembley & Olympia, in the company of people who did have passes, so might be worth contacting your pony's owner. It would be lovely for you to have a reunion with him!

I think they are already a bit swamped to be honest! Apparently his fan club is consisting of at least 3 of his former owners (excluding breeders who might well be there anyway due to show pony classes) and possibly 4 of us might be there (with accompanying family) then add a large number of Oli's local pony club and various others!

If I don't see him there though I will be making special effort in coming months. I am 99% sure of who is buying him after HOYS (as Oli is in last year) and if I'm right he will be very very close to my new job!

Smuggling that many people into the stables not really an option! Still it's good news that you're likely to get the chance to see more of him in the coming months. Hope he does well.

They were really hot on it last year. I went one day without a pass, went into the collecting ring area to help someone get ready for their class, then was not allowed back in with my normal ticket and had to walk all the way back round and come in the main entrance again! At least I have proper passes this year.
