Hi there, someone has been looking after my bitch this morning and apparently she mated and tied with one of the Jack Russels in the yard - I didn't even realise that she was in season, he hadn't shown any interest in her before. I've only had her about a fortnight and was planning on getting her spayed as soon as possible....!

Anyway, is there anything that I can do to prevent pregnancy? I have tried to phone my vet and of course it is out of hours, I have left a message with the emergency service to call me back, but in the meantime I wondered if anyone knew.....

Thanks!

If you were going to have her spayed, just go ahead with it - that will sort both matters out

Hadn't thought of that one! Sounds really stupid but I have never had an entire bitch (is that the right expression??) before, someone told me that you had to be midway between seasons to spay, is that just preference or fact?

I just can't believe how stupid I am not to notice that she was in season!

With some bitches you really cannot tell, so don't beat yourself up about that!

Regarding the spaying, it can be done any time as far as I am aware, but it is years since I had abitch spayed

If she is pregnant you can have her speyed 4 weeks into pregnancy.....u could also get a misalliance injection...but if u are going to spey her anyway I agree with Weezy just get her an in pup spay.

we wont spey until 12weeks after the season and never spey pregnant bitches, so at our practice you'd be given the misalliance jab alizin which can be giving 2 jabs 48hrs apart anytime up to 45days post-mating (although would be a big thing if left that late).
