Hi, My 4 year old Lab X has always had an intollerance to certain foods alongside a skin condition that is treated by a mixture of Atopica and Viacutin. Problem now is that most foods are making him sick sometimes or the runs!

Vet has checked him over and no medical problems and gave me a sensitive food diet that he ate for a couple of days and then refused, I left him 4 days!

He is also overweight and am now really struggling with what dried feed to give him. Currently he is having a mixture of just pedigree chum dried food and a bit of lean chicken or tuna in it since won't eat dry.

He has not been sick but is still runny and his coat is not looking as shiny, anyone any ideas and he will not eat anything raw! Thanks in advance........since have tried Iams, James Wellbeloved, Science Plan, and a hollistic one I cannot remember name of!

has he been york tested so you actually know what he is allergic to?

try chappie wet food for now and get a york test done to find out what he allergic to if not already done

there are many many sensitive food diets but if you do not know what the dog is sensitive/allergic to then there is not a lot of point feeding them as you may be feeding one which is based on the dogs most sensitive food stuff.

Agree with Twiggy, either through tests or isolation, you need to find out what he is allergic to. Also agree try Chappie tins, they are very bland and ideal for sensitive stomachs. Pedigree Chum is...not great.

Whilst I am a big raw advocate, my old dog was allergic to most things and raw actually made him worse. He did pretty well on Jollyes own brand fish and rice which was blanch mulch, and when it was discontinued, Wainwrights Senior Salmon and Potato (food for older dogs has less protein which was one of the things that set him off). He could not deal with things like chicken, lamb, wheat, corn etc.

You could try Natural Instinct tubs, which is raw but very finely minced and palatable, the Prize Choice frozen blocks from Pets at Home (they do white fish, rabbit, tripe etc) or the Nature Diet or Wainwrights wet trays.

We had a lab with a very sensitive stomach and whilst we were recommended chappie - it didn't work with him.

Without knowing what he's allergic to its hard, but if we assume he's allergic to cereals - then a raw diet may solve the problem.

Labradors do very well on burns especially if they need to loose weight. You could try adding a little canned pumpkin to help bind him. It's wavailable from waitrose or tesco online. Tree barks powder may help or a pro biotic. Has he been tested for campylobacter? This gives intermittent diarrhoea but otherwise can be symptomless.
Good luck

I have my lab on burns pork and potato. Only thing that sorted her, everything else upset her. The company are also incredibly helpful if you give them a ring they will send you samples and give you lots of advice over the phone.

my 3 big dogs all have allergies and we found the best way was raw diet and a process of elimination. They don't have red meat but can tolerate poultry, fish, rabbit and venison. Can't give anything with wheat in so have to be careful with treats but there are lots that are nearly 100% fish.
The specialist vet we see for their allergies (Sue Paterson) told me allergy tests for food aren't very accurate and the best way is by eliminating, it takes a long time as you have to avoid for at least 6 weeks per type.

Try slippery elm bark powder and aloe vera juice, both availible from Holland and Barrett. We cured a cat that had been treated with probiotics, antibiotics and prescription diets due to his uncontrollable, bloody and highly offensive diarrhoea. He came to us as a stray that was on the cusp of being pts. The vets couldn't find out the cause or the cure for his problems but after 2 months of aloe vera with his food (which he loved) he was 100% cured and has never looked back 4 years on.x

My dog is allergic to everything! We worked with a company called trophy (they are a franchise so there might be one in your area) and they got him sorted on some hyper sensitive dry food which has been fine. Remember to also cut out all treats coz the slightly thing could set them off...
