Hi,

I'm looking for a younster, prefer just broken, bred to event, 16.1hh plus, gelding preferred, must pass 5* vetting, would love a grey or a smart coloured. South West, but would travel for the right horse. No ex racer's.

A horse bred to event at that age/height that's been just backed will be hard to find for under £3k. You may need to look for something younger which hasn't been backed, or something which doesn't have brilliant breeding.
 
I don't want a 4* horse, just some thing to do low level eventing. I'd consider a un backed 3 or 4 year old. Don't mind quirkyness... I thought it was a buyers market? Maybe I'll have to re-think my budget. Thanks

These guys are up my way- tend to have a lot of good eventer/jumper types. You just have to be quite careful as they are dealers and buy from Ireland.
They have a really nice grey eventer type at the minute- beautiful jump too!

Don't you love seeing horses that people have just started backing - now for sale cheap! Guess why!!

I would be immensely suspicious of anything backed, suitable to event - even at lower level - that was for sale under about £4,500. You can't breed a nice youngster, rear it to 4 years old, and back it properly for a penny under that - and there would be NO profit at that price! A breeder/producer would have to be desperate - or know there was something wrong with the horse!

yes but if they need to sell something and its a private seller then they do sell cheap. and i know of someone who had to do this becasue of personal circumstances

True - but there are 'personal circumstances' and then there are 'personal circumstances'!! I had a very 'nice' mare here for a client until recently - client had to sell for 'personal circumstances' - one, she was short of money and the training bills were mounting up; and two, the horse scared her witless (for fair reason - she WAS a serious handful!) She was sold 'cheap' (£1,500 is cheap for a well-bred sport horse mare) with FULL disclosure of her quirks, to an experienced rider who likes quirky mares. But hell - it took months to find him!

The owner might have been better off selling her 'from the field' for a third of that price - because I wouldn't sell it with anything other than full disclosure (I won't lie to sell my own - let alone a client's - I value my reputation!) But thankfully the owner had a conscience!
