Hi

Just wondering if anyone could please share their comments on the below question -

"In what way can urine tests help in diagnosis?"

Any comments appreciated

Thank you

I know better in humans than horses but... show evidence of and if cultured, presence of urinary tract infection. Kidney function. Help with liver function diagnosis. Presence of kidney stones. Do they use urine testing as part of IR diagnosis? Not sure tbh. Just some ideas to start you off.

Dex has an ongoing Hepatitis issue, he very nearly died last year and had biopsy x4, steroids etc. We thought we were managing it well with diet and had a precautionary blood test before the insurance claim ran out..we were all upset to find that although he looks and seems amazing, his bloods are not :( he is also dehydrated so the Vet took urine on Friday to try to find some more information..

My horse recently had some urine tests and for him it identified that the PH was high and he had some sediment/crystals (tiny Bladder stones). The high PH would have caused these and I have to try to reduce the PH by adding Vitamin C to his diet and making sure not to add beet pulp and alfalfa. It also identified that there wasn't any infection or blood in his urine. The annoying thing about urine tests are that it is difficult to catch a horse urinating in time to get a sample and a catheter may need to be inserted to collect same which I think is invasive and obviously adds to the cost. I think they should be coupled with a blood test to get a full picture of health.
