I was listening to Radio 1 at lunchtime, and some of the comments that were broadcast were unbeliavable. One man interviewed in Pennslyvania said he wouldn't vote for Obama because 'blacks are lazy, and he is a Muslim and will be killed'. Another said he wouldn't vote for Hillary because 'a woman couldn't handle the stress'. I was really shocked by these views, and that they were broadcast on naitonal radio. The comments were toned down a lot before being put on the website:

While I don't agree with the comments you've quoted and didn't hear the programme (me and Radio 1 are not friends, I wouldn't willingly inflict it upon myself!) did you expect anything less from the Americans? Also why should they tone down their comments if that is what they think just because some people don't like them? While I'm definitely not a racist and believe we should all get along with each other and respect each other, there are many that don't and I believe many in this country might feel the same way but aren't allowed to say so in this nanny state.
I believe over there they still agree with free speech so I can't see your problem, sorry. R1 were only reporting it weren't they, not agreeing with it?

Oh well.......Pennsylvania

What do you expect ?

MFH_09...WTF...anything less of the Americans? Seriously, they are not all that 'introverted'. It was comments from individuals...don't generalise. Although those in the inner states may be plonks, us east coasters aren't generally stupid ! (I am a Yank who has been here since the age of 2 and moving back to do in a MA in August - getting rather grumpy with the anti-yank sentiment in this country....) Hmph.

You know, I wouldn't expect to find such radically different sentiments expressed in white, underclass "strongholds" in the UK. I grew up in Wigan and was exposed--as an olive-skinned, part-Italian--to horrendous racial abuse.

While there are plenty of hokey rednecks and boonies in the US, there are swathes of educated, well-travelled, well-versed people; heck, Obama isn't doing too badly at all!

Absolutely! Everyone knows that all Americans generalise about people from other countries

I predict he will be the next president!

But I am from Wisconsin and we almost always swing Democrat.

Either way, I pitty any president coming into this mess

JadeWisc - hehe - yeah, born in New York, parents in Va, I am going to South Carolina - may be a bit plonkerish there! (Hmm....definition of plonk....erm....not sure how to describe it, not that bad though!
smile.gif
- on par with dunce/slightly short of a few brain cells...only a few)

I for one must admit that I know little enough about US politics that I will not be getting involved with my mail vote. Once I am over there though I am sure that we will be voting democrat.

Here Here prose - I think people forget the size of the country - if you made England that size...what would it be known for? Oh wait...its already known for a booze and asbo culture!
smile.gif

I think the people on the radio were out of order imho and put a very bad view of the States out to the rest of the world.

Off to a lecture now. (at bloody 9am....god will they never learn that students don't do 9am - says she up at 6:30 as takes hours)...let the yank bashing begin!

Oh yes

Much more dunces in Wisconsin and all of the central states as vs. South Carolina and Va!
smirk.gif
Have you BEEN to those places?
crazy.gif
I think far more racial intolerance, poverty and lack of education is found there than where I live. In fact, I am certain of it
shocked.gif

I guess the East coast is not the mecca of intelligence and class that you thought?

That being said, there are just as many wonderful and cultured people there I am sure. I just hate generalising

Well does that suprise you? Would a positive comment make news? Of course the media portarys the US like this and all sorts of ignorant people eat it up and assume everyone here is like that
smirk.gif
Much like some people here make assumptions on other places based on inflated news worthy portrayals. It is up to the individual to use thier brain to filter media hype from fact. I feel sad for those who generalise about certain cultures and places based on bits and pices of what they see in the news and it is really hard to even consider doing here because it is such a massive place with so many different cultures. I also find it sad when people assume they know all about the US based on a trip or two to Orlando, LA or NY

I heard that and couldn't believe both those comments! I wanted to set Margaret Thatcher on that man!!!

'blacks are lazy, and he is a Muslim and will be killed'

False, True, Unlikely.

Prejudiced and bigotted he certainly is but he is a prejudiced bigot with a vote.

Hopefully most Americans will vote on who will least likely cost them there house or job and who will bring the troops back fastest.

Very true! And if we had a poltiical campaign with such a varied choice of candidates, I am sure similar comments would be obtained from any and every constituency in the UK.

Is sich bigoted opinions are not reported on, peopple may become complacent and think that such veiws they no longer exist

I will agree, VA and SC in general are not the educated hotspots of the world, but Charleston isn't so bad, neither is Williamsburg! (William & Mary etc!)

May be something to do with those states being in the Deep South - tolerance takes a while especially when the population aren't particularly educated! Think it may be a Confederate thing!

The 2 people interviewed make 1 fair point though. Everyone would be gunning (literally) for the irishman (Barry O'Bama) or Clinton. Neither would make it alive through a whole term. I wouldn't fancy being in their Secret Service detail!

As awful as this sound I have a feeling you may be right. Not Clinton as much as Obama. I was just having this conversation a few days ago in fact. There are pockets of hateful people here that are capable of such a thing and I would be shocked if at least there was not an attempt.
