US Olympic Team

Actually surprised no one has mentioned her participation at Barbury the other week. I would have thought given the still very strong feelings about her there maybe would have been the odd boo, hiss or stronger comments directed towards her using a British event as a training exercise.

Same here. Expected loads of reactions... A kind of boycott ?

Didn't even know she was there! [funnily enough she shows up on the results page on the BE website, but the event doesn't show up under her results?]

Makes me really cross she has been included in the Olympic team. What kind of message does that give out? "Oh its fine, you can kill a horse through selfishness and stupidity, but don't worry, we'll still pick you to represent our country!"

I can think of another rider traveling to the Olympics whom I've personally seen pushing an unsound horse on through the last three fences of Blenheim.....

i think a lot of us are still gobsmacked by what she did and the fact that she somehow seems to have gotten away with it, but what can we do? vilify her forever? it's done, the horse is gone, and i'm pretty positive she'll never do anything so unbelievably awful again.
i think it's terrible that she's on the team, personally, but obviously the powers that be have short memories. *shrugs*

Who?

I was appalled to see she was riding in this country, and saw her at Barbary where there was no reaction to her presence, but then we horsey Brits are a polite lot! Most definitely she should not have been picked to represent her country anywhere, and ought to have been banned for life. She's not a light weight, if anything rather solid, and to have done what she did to that poor horse was wicked. This sends out some very wrong messages on horse welfare and implies that to do what she did is acceptable with no long term penalty. Disgraceful.

Was Becky Holder not seriously over weight? Has she lost a lot of weight?

An interesting thought is why she (AT) is allowed and is obviously highly regarded by the US squad, yet the latest potential inclusiion of the athlete from teh UK that has served a 2 year ban for drugs may make it, but evidently he won't be welcomed, and has been very publically cold shouldered...

So - doing drugs - BAN
Killing a Horse - Fine?

Not sure about that personally...

Becky Holder has battled with her weight for years, her horse Courageous Comet if fabulous.

AT on the other hand is just a BIG built woman, very mannish and rides HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY. I cringe every time I see her on little Poggio hauling away at him, the horse is a saint. Watch her the next time, or watch old vids, she is very "loose" - her centre of gravity slops back and too on the horse out of rhythm.

And of course she was never in doubt of not being on the team regardless with MP in charge.

A VERY good point Bandit!!

Which was going to be the extent of my response, but I have thought about it and I guess it is because one is due to negligence/recklessness and the other a calculated choice made in advance....

Not saying it's right, just my law student mind thinking about the mens rea aspect...

What a shame that Teddy isn't still here to make the team

I would have absolutely loved watching that little man at the Olympics

Kerilli & Spiral, rather than kick off a whole other debate in this thread I shall PM you when I get the chance - unless another HHOer has beaten me to it, as a few of us witnessed it together totally opened mouthed in disbelief

thanks Puppy, someone else pm'd me to tell me who it was. shocked.
but people have short memories.. i can think of a few top riders who have ridden a tired horse to a fall/standstill/to death and are still going, with lots of owners etc.

i agree with the above points about AT's riding, quite apart from the whole Le Samurai debacle.
Becky Holder - the rumour was that she wasn't on the U.S. team last year because of her weight, hopefully she's managed to do something about it because the thought of a good t.b. carrying more than the minimum its rider can be, xc in Hong Kong, is not a nice thought. i'm sure a lot of us can remember how gaunt Mark Todd got because he dieted so hard to ride Charisma at the Olympics...
