... quite a comical hack to get readings from as it turned out.

We had a bit of an over excited Beast moment when a nearly yearling in a field we were passing decided to come charging over just as a car was coming... this resulted in an impromptu canter due to pent up excitement once the car was past and I asked her to walk on again.

I'm impressed that Equilab can discern paces by more than just speed... it must measure how the phone moves as well.

So my hack stats...
4.6km at 6km/hour (46 minutes ish)
34.26 mins walk
7.53 mins trot
10 seconds canter ( felt like forever! Lol )

Walk average speed 5.6km/hour
Trot average speed 10.3km/hour
Canter average speed 9.1km/hour (! That'll be why is felt like I was cantering on the spot before she stopped)

Average stride
1.7m walk
2.1m trot
1.2m canter! Hahaha.

It also tells me how many MJ she's burned and how many calories I burned. And overall I'm quite impressed with the app.

I feel a whole new level of obsessing coming on...

Does anyone else use Equilab or similar? What kind if data do you get?

I used it for my lesson last week, but haven't ridden since (been away for work). I'm hoping to get out for a hack this evening, if I can persuade someone to come with me, so it'll be interesting to see the difference between schooling and hacking.

Edit: Schooling stats...
2.1km at 2km/hr
24 minutes at walk
4 minutes at trot
And it doesn't show the time pretty much stationary learning turn on the forehand!

Walk average speed 3.2km/hr
Trot average speed 7.8km/hr

Walk average stride 1m
Trot average stride 1.6m

She's only got little legs, bless her.

I use it a lot - my data from stick and balling is always comical, but it's useful on hacks for keeping an eye on distances and speeds for fitness too.

I find the gait analysis better on my horse than my ponies, and the GPS isn't sensitive enough to realistically track tight turns stick and balling, but it's pretty good really!

Wow! That's lots of pink, JFTD!

And bless her little legs, Pippity.

Quite excited to try it for schooling now too! Especially to compare to hacking.

I like it along with endomondo, helps me keep track of distance/times very helpful for endurance stuff.
stats from my last ride are
Walk 108mins av speed 5.9kmph
Trot 16.10mins av speed 14mph
Canter 6.28mins av speed 22.8kmph

I used to use Endomondo a few years ago and then it started failing on me so I gave up in the end - is it worth giving another try?

On my ponies it sometimes mistakes canter for trot especially if I'm two pointing rather than sitting.

It's much more reliable on my mare. And yes, we do quite a lot of canter ;) That last one was stick and balling last spring, hence it's so pink. Last time time I went jump schooling we did 16 minutes of canter, averaging 16.5km/h, 10 minutes of trot at 10.8km/h. Last hack was 42 minutes walk (5.5km/h), 12 minutes trot (10.9km/h), 13 minutes canter (15.5km/h) - 10km in 60 minutes, 8km/h).

I have recently downloaded this, but for some reason i don't get the squiggly lines when i have been schooling anyone know why???, however, it did give me time spent in walk, trot and canter etc, will be interesting to see if it shows up my route on a hack.

I sometimes can't see them straight away either.

If you flick to the Trends screen, choose All Trainings and click on the date, you should be able to see the squiggles. Then select full screen mode and there should be an option to overlay on a google image. Bingo!

:( still no squiggles but i have had to change my settings on my phone as something to do with my power mode? Will see if it works tonight :)

.

Mine is a tb and I do rising trot mainly. Rising trot = canter, sitting trot = canter, canter two point, half seat or siitting are all canter = canter. He's really lazy too so can hardly say it's a speed issue.

Meredith, it's an app that you can download on your phone and it tracks your riding whether hacking or in the school with your horse. It's very good and interesting, lots of stats on gaits etc to analyse. My horse is currently lame but before that I used it a lot, it really helped me see how little I pushed myself out of my hacking comfort zone :)

An app that you download (upload?!) on to your phone and it tracks you when you ride. Tells you time in each gait, turns, calories burned, how you did compared to last ride etc. Can get a bit obsessive...

Thanks both. I will ask more technologically minded OH to see if my simple phone will accept the app.

If it works expect updates!

Can it send the results to another phone? OH has always been concerned that as I ride alone that I am OK. He could see the ride ended at home for example.

Are there any other apps for this? - will a cycling or running app work?

For hacking I have used both sportypal and runtastic (endomondo kept getting lost and thinking I was in east europe). Found them really good for tellling me how far and and where i hack. Gives average speed broken down into miles and top speed. And when I first move to a new area I can superimpose them onto maps to work out new routes.

I really like it! It did get a bit confused between trot and canter on some points on my last hack but I had quite long stirrups, he was boingy and the phone was in my gilet pocket rather than my jods so I assumed one or all of those factors was responsible.

I'm considering paying for the safety tracking feature if we ever move to having horses at home. Expensive when I'm on a livery yard and there's someone around to see me home safe 99% of the time but not so expensive if I was hacking from home while husband was at work!

Managed to get the squiggles to work however I can't read all of the information as the page seems cut cut it a bit short but I can get the general idea now

No it's definitely not a speed thing - it's done using the phone's gyroscopes to detect the horse's motion. But I guess there's more variation in how horses move than can be accommodated by their software at present... I can see why it might struggle with my ponies, who are fast moving, bouncy little monsters with short legs and fast strides. I'm not so sure why it would struggle with a nice normal TB type - but that's tech for you... Great when it works, rubbish when it doesn't!
