Useless electric fencing tape drums - any alternatives?

I'm fed up with the part-plastic, part cardboard drums on which ordinary electric fencing tape is sold, and I wondered if any of you substituted something better?

Our horses are very respectful of tape, so we rarely use it electrified. We strip graze and also 'paddock ' our pasture with it, and if there is more tape on the roll that we require we just leave it on the roll and hanging, rather than cut it. The trouble is that the roll bit of the drum is made of cardboard, and as soon as that gets damp the ends fall off!

Today I was reducing a large cirle of new grass, and nearly went insane trying to rewind surplus tape onto the roll. There must be some better, more solid kind of roller onto which we could transfer our tape on purchase - only we can't think of one! We watch with envy as the local contract shepherd unrolls seeming miles of sheep fence automatically from his quad bike. That sort of equipment we couldn't justify, but if anybody knows where we could get all-metal drums, or ANYTHING better that what we have now, we would love to know. Thank you.

I use the holder that hose pipe goes on - also has a handle to wind it on saves hours of frustration! You can buy proper electric fencing ones but I had the hose one knocking about.

You can buy hand reels to wind your tape onto - I couldn't manage yards and yards of tape without one. Best used with the metal spike/stand to hang the reel on when winding in the tape.

Hosepipe storage wheel lashed to stake in ground (put notches in the stake so wheel doesn't slip down), you will also need to rig up a wire hook or put a stick through the holes to allow you to "lock" the wheel to tension the tape. Unfortunately can't find you a picture:(

The tape I buy comes on plastic drums, no cardboard at all so no problem. I do cut my tape to length though, leaving extra wrapped up & down a plastic post so it's there is I need it. I wouldn't charge up a fence with a reel of tape still attached, the sparking & arking wouldn't be good.

Another vote for winding onto the hosepipe reel thing. Cheap and easy. I have seen a freind wind hers into a long tape case - they type they use to measure distances in long throwing competitions. But I think the hosepipe reel is easier to get hold of!

Thank you so much everyone for all your answers. Now I understand why I didn't get to university!! I'll start with the hosepipe holder idea, as my neighbour has an old one I think he will let me 'liberate', and progress on to the welders' wire one - and we have a Mole Valley 10 miles away. As we have three separate paddocked bits I will be able to experiment with all ideas.

You are all brilliant.I shall go and have another mug of Complan, and then decide what to do with all the wonderful hours I shall now have free......
